Tom Richey...

I picked up a Tom Richey mountain bicycle at the Dump the other day. Does anyone know anything about this old bike? I do not care about value, only whether or not it is a worth while steed.

Shame about the rear wheel. It's not as desirable as filet brazed Ritcheys but it's still a fine '80s machine.

This appears to be one of the subcontracted, Japanese frames. ATB geometry has evolved much over the years and this one is old school and lower mid-range. Personally, I'd be looking for something more modern. BTW, the correct spelling is Ritchey, not Richey.

The lugged Ritchey's were marketed as Rocky Mountain's in canada so that would be a little rarer than your run of the mill tigged US Ritchey and might have some value considering the poor shape of that example.

if that fits and the frame is in good shape it would be a great city bike. that longer wheelbase should ride pretty good. any idea what type of tubing?

"ritchey" brand 4130. My guess some butting. I never saw one of these way back. They were not long lived as a model, not that it is a bad bike, I would have even paid for it, not just picked it up out of the trash.

Actually, I already have my winter ride picked out, tuned up and ready to ride - a similar vintage GT and in excellent condition. In fact, I have been riding it for the past couple of days. Winter is upon us, here in T Bay. Well, not much snow, yet, but cold and ice on the roads, for sure...

Shame about the rear wheel.
I did not notice anything about the rear wheel to attract concern. What did I miss?

Thanks, everyone for the heads up on this one and I had no idea of how many old mountain bikes are starting to surface here. Some pretty darn interesting. Sadly, I know little or nothing about them. Time to start learning...

Also, though someone seemed to think there to be a problem with the bike, it is in very nice shape. No dents or unwanted bends and, believe it or not, with all that reflective tape removed, the cosmetics are pretty good.

About the rear wheel, just minor nit picking the newer Shimano freewheel that's on there, that's all. I'm assuming it's not just the freewheel but the entire wheel that's been swapped out. If you've got a matching Suntour XC sport hub in the back then you're stoked, though!

Love that GT! I had a slightly newer Outpost for a while this year, but sold it because it was small for me. Hoping to get a keeper Karakoram, Corrado or steel Avalanche for a keeper one of these days.

I am putting aside a few bucks each month in order to save up for a plane to ticket to Thunder Bay to visit Randy's dump.

I think that it's easy to say it was stolen at some point in time. I can't imagine anyone remotely interested in bikes sending an intact Ritchey to the dump.

You have absolutely no idea of the incredible bicycles that are pitched away at our local landfill site! Here are a few others that have been tossed there, and salvaged by me...

Mid-seventies Sekine SHT270...

1971 Carlton Professional...

1978 Motobecane Grand Jubilee...

198? Gitane Gran Tour...

198? Peugeot Course...
