His and Hers 1953 Raliegh Sports
Hi, I've got 2 bikes that my parents bought in 1953, and in original unrestored condition. I would like to sell them, but have no idea what they might be worth. Both are operational. They are just sitting in my barn, and should go to a good home. Any ideas? Thanks.

Pricing on old Raleigh Sports is all over the map. - I have seen bikes from this vintage sell for $60 locally, to $500 on eBay.
The older models, especially the 23" men's models with a full chain-case, are the most sought after. Value will hinge on condition as well, so good clear pictures are essential if you want to get a more informed estimate here.

Thanks. I added some pics, but might have to resize them. But there they are for now.

If you are willing to ship, you'll get more by selling them on eBay. Local bike shop can help with the shipping or search the Classic and Vintage forum on how to properly ship a bicycle. List the bikes separately.
Take lots of pictures, include drivetrain and serial numbers wherever you see them. Note any damage such as a dent and include a picture. That will save you a lot of trouble later. Do not use a cellphone to take the pictures.

Those are really nice specimens. - They appear to be all original except for the grips and still have an original pump and saddle bag - plus head lights.
They would be a lot of fun to overhaul and will clean up well - (Old black Raleighs take to Scratch-x like ducks to water, and come out looking fresh from the factory.)

I don't know what you want for these, but I've bought seven old Sports in the past year with prices ranging from $20 at an estate sale to $160 on cl. A pair of barn bikes just like this recently came up on eBay in western MA and only fetched $100 per bike. New parts typically are unavailable, and 2 out of 3 have rusty or wear-pitted bearing races. That said, I'd like a shot at buying these bikes because I LOVE fixing them up and would appreciate having a nice cond frame in my size. Send me a PM if you like (I,'m still too much of a newbie here to PM).

Anything CAN happen on eBay, but a reasonable reserve price will obviate that possibility.
Either of these bikes would bring a good amount of money on eBay - (even in as-is condition).
I've serviced lots of Raleighs and parts availability has NEVER been an issue - even on bikes going back to the 1930's.

Thanks for the info. These bikes are in really good condition mechanically. They lived for decades in my parents basement until I retrieved them a couple of years ago. My mom's bike hasn't been ridden since the 60's, and probably has the better set of wheels. I would like to avoid ebay if possible, but if I can't sell them, I guess I'll go in that direction. I'll post in the for Sale section.
