Hello, I've been searching for a vintage roadbike on CL and have come across this Univega. Model is uncertain. I am fairly new to the bike scene and would like opinions on pricing and the parts listed, much appreciated. Also, if someone can figure out details as to the model and date, that would be awesome.

In a hot market like San Fran, that bike should not last long. RD is first generation Cyclone, which is very highly respected. If that is original, its a sign of a high end bike (I can't see the FD). But in your market, $250 often means low end bike. So even if this Univega is not high end, its a deal compared to what I see in your market. Get in your car now.....

Hey wrk101m thanks for the quick reply. I got a reply and plan to meet with the gentleman this evening. If you don't mind, I would like to hear your opinion on the other components. This will be my first road bike and from researching this feels like a good choice for a bike that I can grow as a cyclist with. Thanks.

This appears to be a late 1970s Univega Gran Premio. Typically these frames were butted CrMo with hi-tensile forks and stays though the presence of the integrated, fully sloping crown would seem to indicate otherwise. The Cyclone derailleurs and Power Shifters, along with the nice forged crankset are the highlights. The gearing seems very high with a relatively tight cluster and a bigger than average, large chainring. Wheels are nothing special, nor are the brakes. The headset is a cheap, cost cutting model. Given the work he's reportedly done, I'm surprised he didn't clean it up more. More of a mid-range model than high end. However, as stated, that's a very hot market and probably a good price, even if it close to orignal MSL. If you get the bicycle, I should be able to determine the exact year via the serial number.

I ended up buying the bike. The serial is F519971. Frame says Hi-Tension/1024 Complete Frame/ Butted Steel Tubing.

That frame was manufactured by Miyata in 1977. Butted hi-tensile tubesets were fairly common on lower mid-range models durng this period. The tubeset is almost certainly a Tange #101 or Tange #102, given the Miyata manufacture. The bicycle is basically equivalent to a Miyata MX-R of the period, with the exception of butted hi-tensile replacing butted CrMo for the main tubes. I assume Lawee did this as a cost concession to the make the bicycle more economically attractive.

Can you post pics, I love univegas. I've got a 1981 gran premio that I'm cleaning and putting together now (it was bought fully disassembled). Great bike though, I can't wait to have it complete. If yours is butted hi-ten then it may not be the gran premio. The gran premio model was one of their high end bikes, and I would be surprised to see it made from hi-ten tubing. My '81 has tange champion, double butted Cr-Mo tubing, cyclone deraillerus, and suntour superbe brakes. The crankset and bb seems to have been swapped for a stronglight, though.
