Trek 2300

This is probably futile without pictures, but I'll give it a shot. I Thinks it's a 1992 model, bonded CF tubes tubes, aluminum head tube, lugs and fork. I know there's little demand for 20 year old CF, but this is a time capsule. I couldn't find a mark on the frame or any of the components. Any ballpark estimate would be helpful, thanks.

Here's a rundown on the parts.

600 Ultegra derailleurs, DT shifters and brake levers
DA 7400 brake calipers
Mavic Starfish triple crankset
DA 7400 hubs and Campy rims, unknown model
Cinelli stem and bars
DA clipless pedals,
Flite Gel saddle

Mix of 600 and DA, excellent condition you say? You're right, little interest in these but it should be worth at least $300. Some people think they're worth $600 (I see them on C/L) and they sit forever. $400 might be possible if it's really mint and well advertised.

Composite carbon bikes get little/no response. They can make an excellent deal for a buyer, lousy deal for a seller. Part out will yield the most $$.

The seller's asking $450, I was thinking of offering $350. The plan would be to part out. How high can I go and keep it profitable. I think this would part out on E-bay for $600 plus. Am I crazy?

First, define profitable. Ebay is the land of variance, and the land of fees.

Personally, on a bike I know I am NOT going to keep, and the sole purpose is a part out, I would not pay that much. First, I take a conservative approach on bikes that I plan to part out. I assume what I cannot fully inspect will have issues (bb, hubs, headset). Any upside on those parts is icing on the cake. Protecting your reputation on ebay is important, so parts that will more likely get whining, I just keep instead. The Mavic crank is a wild card, good value there for sure.

Also back to the variance on ebay, even with the best ad in the world, sometimes items go low.

Yes, I think $600 is pretty optimistic.

One thing I do to mitigate the risk of a buy like this is I rebuild the frame with lesser parts, say 105 or RX100, and then resell it. If I buy right, the resell should cover or exceed the price paid for the bike. Yes, I just raided my parts bin, but I moved it up a big notch. Note, as a result of being conservative, I pass on some good deals. But I also avoid disasters. So I am OK with missing out on occasion. And I do not need every seller to accept my offer.

So my offer would be around what that bike would sell for, fully refurbished, with 105 bits. In my market, I could not get $350 for that bike, so that gives you an idea of my offer. I probably wouldn't be able to get it, as an end user could offer more.

Yeah, I'm going to let this go, thanks for your help
