Should I/ How should I sell these brakes?
 

My 1987 Trek 1000 has a hodge-podge of components. I'm thinking of replacing the brakes with some brakes with a little more stopping power.

These are the type of brakes that are on the bike. They're in good shape, but not perfect.

If I wanted to sell these brakes, where would be the best site to post them? I was thinking Ebay would be better than Craigslist. I have no experience with Ebay. Should I post a minimum price? Is there a better place to try to sell them? I honestly have no clue. If I sell them on Ebay, I know someone who sells books on Ebay for profit - should I ask him if he could post them for me?

Should I even bother? Do you think some one somewhere would be interested? They don't stop as well as a double pivot caliper, but they do look awfully cool.

Search completed auctions on ebay, and compare to the condition of your brakes. Selling on C/L is a guarantee to sell for less. C/L is a good place to buy parts, lousy place to sell them.

No, you should not have someone else sell for you on ebay, you need to develop your own reputation and experience. IF you have never sold anything, it can be a hassle. But it is often the only way to get full value out of an item.

Do not underestimate the value of marketing either. Linking to a catalog is not going to do it. People will expect awesome pictures, showing every minor defect. I buy from poor marketers all the time, both on ebay and C/L. They leave a lot of value on the table. Sometimes they get as little as 25% or even less of full value. Its a tough world out there.

If you want to sell here, you still will need great pics, and expect to get 25% to 33% less than the average ebay completed auction (but you avoid the hassle of ebay).

Both on here and ebay are preferable(more $$) than selling parts on C/L.

Thanks for the advice wrk101. I'm not sure how to search completed auctions on Ebay. Do you have to register with Ebay first? I'll have to figure out how to do that.

Searching current auctions is just about worthless. First, there are some crazy sellers with ridiculous prices (which they don't get). And until an auction is completed, there is no way to know what something goes for. On many auctions, most of the bidding occurs in the last 10 seconds or so (I always bid with 6 seconds left, using software of course).
