1989 Club Fuji

I'm finally selling my Club Fuji. It's really too small for me, but I've held on to it. I've seen some listed on the Philly Craigslist for $400, but I'm not sure how much you think that cosmetic condition of my bike hurts it's value. There are some scuffs on the pain and one scratch along the top tube (I think from a bike rack). There is no rust, and I have just overhauled the hubs, put new bar tape on, trued the wheels, etc.

Here are some pictures. It has suntour Ole components and is a 54cm.

Would this be a better eBay item than Craigslist?

Any advice would be a appreciated!

Thanks!

I sold one, in pristine, ready to ride condition, in a more desirable size, last year, for $235. And it took me a while to get it (+/- 2 months). Philly market is better, so add a premium of your choice.

I don't see that many Ole parts on there. Are the brake calipers Ole? The stem is definitely not (I have an Ole stem in my stash). F and RD look to be Ole. Crank is Sugino (not sure if there was an Ole branded crank). Pedals are nice for sure. I don't see Club Fujis going for $400, even in hot markets. Realize people can ask any price they want, does not mean they will get it. Also the Club Fuji was fifth in the Fuji racing bike lineup that year. Kind of middle of the pack, perhaps upper middle. The lack of chrome is also a cap on value. The vintage Japanese racing bikes that bring the most around here tend to chrome touches: stays, dropouts, fork crown, etc. Now by 1989, chrome was going out.

How are your marketing skills? How much have you sold on ebay? Selling on ebay is a lot of work, I do it every week. And its the land of variance. The same item, on the same day, can go for wildly different prices. I always give the example of a Trek 620 I bought off ebay for $113. Ending on the same day, within an hour of that bike, was another Trek 620, that went for over $400. The difference? Marketing. Oh yeah, and the one I bought was sold by a "professional" storefront ebay business.

ebay is also the land of MUST ship, and MUST ship at a reasonable price. Taking it to a bike shop, letting them handle it, and passing the cost through will get you negative feedback or low DSR scores on ebay.

Myself, I am a big fan of Ole, so if your bike showed up here, I would be coming to see you. Most buyers seeking that "look" go for Sante instead. Not much interest in Ole (other than from me...)

I picked one up about this time of year in 2010 for about $300 (IIRC) in VGC to AS New Condition. Unfortunately it was too small and I had to pass it along.

This is a great bike and Ole is a bit underrated, as is Suntour in general. It woks very well but not quite as smoothly as shipmano.

You may get a few bites at $400 but I think you shoukd be willing to take closer to three. If some hipster buys it for a Fixie give him my email and tell him I am interested in the stuff he takes off.

I just sold one last week-same size (NYC), probably a little worse for wear. $275. If I'd cleaned it up and waited for the right buyer I could have gotten $350.

Also, I think this is a 1988 model and completely stock.

If you have any experience parting it out..that may also be an option.

You're right. It is an '88. That was a typo on my part. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've seen the Ole parts don't go for a whole lot used. I'm thinking it would just be a lot of work without much extra value. Bianchigirl - I will definitely pass your offer along if that looks like what they are planning to do with it.

I'm not in any rush to get rid of it, so I've listed it at $400. I'll see if I get any bites

Thanks for the advice! It's given me an idea of how low I should be willing to negotiate!

You'd have to find someone who really wants Ole components and despite living in NYC--I didn't get any bites specific to the group..the one interesting item is the pedals--I suspect you'd get some extra money for those separately..or keep them.

I also think that in 1988 the Club was a little higher on the hierarchy. I also think the wheel set with the Sansin hubs is worth keeping..but you'd have to remove and replace the cluster..idk..it's a nice bike.

I'm selling an 82 Club Fuji in absolutely pristine condition (but large size) and am not seeing love at $350. My market is about the same as Philly in pricing. As Thrifty Billl says, good marketing makes a difference.

I sold my '86 Club Fuji for $320. But that's Portland... in a hot economy. With a serious overhaul.

I think $400 is a good start.
