Mercier/Rough valuation please?
Hi folks....my neighbour's trying hard to sell me a bike that's sat in his garage for the past 20 years. It needs some basic tlc to it but in general it looks tidy enough & it's kinda lovely to ride. I say kinda because at 6ft 2in it's way to big for me (neighbour says the original owner was 6ft 7in!)
Not too sure how to measure a frame but this one is 28in from crank centre to cross bar & cross bar 25.5in from centre to centre. As it's to big for me then I'd be buying to sell it on, so I'd like a rough idea as to what it might be worth as the buyer and/or as the seller.
All input very much appreciated ta.
The list of components is as follows but I've likely got a spelling wrong here or there.
Frame Reynolds 531C
Weinmann centre pull brakes, levers and clamped changers to the down tube.
Handlebar stem...SR Royal
Rims...27in Wolber Modele 58 Superchamp
Hubs & Q/Release ....Gipiemme
Gearset....Suntour Cyclone
Pedals....Modele Bernard Hinoult
Toe cages (or whatever they're called?).... Christophe Gran Premio
Crank.......Mundial
Saddle.....Modison G II
Saddle stem....Sm/Sme100
Rack....Vetta
Pump....Lapize
Bell...Adie
Basic Water Carrier
& a cute belt driven trip meter.....Sachs Huret.
The front rim has a very slight wander & the spokes are 50% rust coloured.
Hopefully I've managed to upload a photo?
Many thanks/Gill

Probably worth about $250 total. Parts are nothing special, and good luck finding that 6' 7" guy or gal who's itching for a vintage 531.
Personally, I would pass unless I could get it for well under $50. The margin isn't there for the amount of time you'd have to spend. Pretty much a white elephant.

Wow. Well, I disagree with thinktubes above, but only if you are very patient. That is a very nice frame, and worth a lot to someone who is very tall. Those folks have a very hard time finding appropriately sized bikes. It may take a while to sell it, but I think you could get at very least $500 for it if you are patient. Maybe I'm wrong.

Ha! Good point. Though the OP may have more exposure via this forum and ebay.

Umm....thanks for the two differing opinions, both worthy perhaps.
I'm more confused by the pepeating of my statement re neighbour, the Ha! Good point & the OP/exposure/forum/ebay??
Forumeese perhaps...but I don't speak it I'm afraid.

OP = Original Poster = you
The amount of money you'll get out of a deal like this is a matter of how much time you're willing to spend and how long you're willing to wait for the right buyer. IMO time=money

Large frame equals difficult sale.
This, however, is a really large frame made a high end material. Once you get past 62/63cm (about as big as standard production runs go) or so they get harder to find, especially made of decent steel. This one looks well past 62. I'd like proper measurements of the frame.
Still probably a difficult sale. Also likely oversize3 to ship, which makes shipping prohibitive.

I believe the neighbor is trying to sell the bike to the OP as a rider not an investment. As this is the OPs first post I would suspect he has very little exposure to this forum or selling bikes on ebay.
I agree with Thinktubes unless the OP is atleast as tall as the neighbor ( and I suspect this bike is too big for the neighbor) the bike is no good for the OP.
Yes to the right person a 67cm 531 frame might be worth $500 but how long do you have to wait? The components are midlevel so the only real value is the frame.
If the OP is after a rider this is a huge pass!!

+1 If it fits, go for it.
If not, how are your packing skills? I just spent three hours packing a similar sized frameset. OK, I am slow, and very careful on the packing. But getting a frame that big to fit in a shippable box (without paying huge premium) is challenging. I ended up at 125 inches, versus 130 inch limit.

I would agree. You're unlikely to find another in that size.
If you are buying to flip, I would not go much above parts value.

It will take a while to find a buyer in that size, but $350-500 is reasonable.

Thanks again for all your replies...much appreciated.
I've received a couple of PM's re possible purchase & shipping to the States.
The guy has now listed it on eBay UK for 150 Stirling & it's already got a host of watcher's.
He's not gonna be too keen to ship abroad because of the extra hassle involved but I'm guessing he may
if someone greases his palm enough?
Hopefully I'm able/allowed to post the eBay link here:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1307151540...84.m1586.l2649
His Tel No. is in the description.
Thanks again/Gill
