Benotto Modelo 1000

Benotto Modelo 1000 - Appears to be early 80s.

How much is it worth?

Super light bike in very good condition.
Light wear, few scratches and looks great.
23 inch / 58.4 cm seat tube measured from middle of BB to middle of top tube
22.75 inch / 57.8 cm top tube from middle of seat tube to middle of head tube
Crack in stem (see pictures). I would not do any serious riding without replacing the stem.
Couple of spokes on rear wheel have stripped spoke nipples and can't be tightened. (Approx 2 or 3 spokes need replacement)
Purchased at Gord's cycle and ski in Winnipeg, Canada

Hoping someone can help me to get an idea of what it may be worth please.

If it was yours would you:
1. Ride it as is
2. Sell it and buy another bike with more modern gearing
3. Upgrade the components (power train) to something more modern. Put a flat bar on it?

Not sure if the bike is worth enough or high-end enough that I should keep or sell it intact, or if it would be reasonable to change out pieces to make it more functional for me.

The market is Winnipeg is not all that strong. With that in mind and knowing a bit about the bicycle, $250 - $350 would be reasonable if you wish to purchase and ride the bicycle. If your intent is to make money, then you had better hope to buy it for $150 or less, in my opinion.

You can get a better understanding of how to figure out value by having a look through Vintage Bicycle Value, but that will only tell part of the story. None the less, the information will help you understand what to look for and what to pay when out and about Vintage Bicycle Hunting.

Refurbish and ride the bicycle. Do not spend any more money on it than you have to at first. Get the bike road worthy, safe to ride and then ride it for a while. Keep or upgrade decisions can be made at a later time. Do not alter the bike at first. For my money, keep the bike as original as you possible can. Doing so will save you money and might even help you make a profit, should you ever choose to sell the bike.
