Please help w/appraisal - Bianchi TSX
****Oh..I have to apologize. I did not see there is a special tread for appraisals. If it is not ok please close this topic and I will copy to the appropriate place.*****
I need you help with appraisal.
The story is a little unusual - we are in the middle of the trade vintage watch for vintage bike.
we made an exchange and the guy wants to appraise my watch. Why I can't make the same to him?
This bike looks like 1997 Reparto Corse TSX.
It is full Athena group. 8 spd.
The wheelset looks like brand new Mavic Open Pro with Campy hubs.
The bike is like new condition. No scratches, dings or anything. Like never been dropped.
The only thing I do not like is the treadless stem with treaded fork. But I can work on it.
I will try to help you with the pics.
How much would you say this bike worth. I have a number he wants to sell it for, but do not want to confuse
Thank you for your help.

That frame originally retailed for $750.00 in 1996. It is still worth that in that condition , as a complete bike around $1250.00-1500.00 IMO. BTW it's TSX-UL

For me to consider it even $500 would be too much. This is why I started to look around the house for any thing I can trade it for.
Appraisal is not about how much we would concider to pay for it, but how much it worth

I have watched those frames on ebay, am pretty confident in the pricing. Big market , rare bike in great condition. They bring good money. Looks like that one went for $1000.00 he should of pieced it on fleabay

The seller will almost certainly consider your appraisal of the watch to be too high. That's pretty much standard operating procedure. Let the games begin.

But I'm looking forward to hear that my watch worth $250 less than asking price for the bike I'm prepared for this.

I never appraised my watch yet, even on semi-professional level, and I did not have a plan to trade them - originally I proposed one of 3 bikes for trade.
But I'm looking forward to hear that my watch worth $250 less than asking price for the bike I'm prepared for this.

Well, if you don't even have a value on the watch, what's the sense in us appraising the bicycle? It's obvious that you need to provide us with the same info on the watch, as you have for the bicycle. Then we could tell you how much cash you'll need to lay down to make the trade.
You will gimmme the estimate +- $500 ?
Let me wait with the final of this story till tomorrow.
I'm very appreciated for the input from all of you and I got the picture of the approximate value of this bike..
More to come...

Well.. as it was predicted the guy replied with the statement that the watch was appraised $300 less then asking price for the biek, but he wants to take the watch plus $200.
I said that I want my watch back and I will pay the full asking price for the bike which is - $800.
***
The identical twin of my Rolex (same band, color, year, condition) was sold on ebay today for $1525 with 15 bidders.

I feel like I got the italian bike and Rolex for $800 today.

I decided to be a little philosophical about this issue - I have a steel SS Langster that weights around 20 lbs, with 1750 g wheelset and carbon fork.
I'm afraid Open Pros are littile bit heavier, plus crankset, cassette, steel fork, seatpost looks nice but heavy... extra 75g on saddle... etc. 100g here...200g there and we are in 23-ish territory.
Is it a normal weight for a semi-racing bike of mid 90-th?
Probably not....

because someone else and another one appraised higher.. hmmm.
Asking price and appraisal a little bit different.
That watch, by his words was appraised between $200 and $500 by 3 professional appraisers (and I believe him..seriously. His bike would be appraised possibly $400-$500 in any bike store and it is normal) and usually they go for $1200-1500 on ebay... who has to be questioned?

Typically, the high end stuff goes for about half (or less) of ebay completed items.
When I want ebay prices (or anything even remotely similar), its off to ebay.
As far as your 10 to 20% deduct, realize ebay fees all in are pushing 15%, plus the hassle of shipping, plus the variation in auction prices, plus buyers win any/all disputes, etc. Got a pair of high end shoes that I sold returned once on ebay, because they didn't match the buyer's blue dress. You bet, ebay sided with buyer... And so it goes in the world of ebay. Got two deadbeat buyers last week (never paid). I consider the hassles to just be part of the cost of selling on ebay. Fortunately, most auctions go without a hitch.
Whenever a seller tells me they can get $xxx for their bike on ebay, I just recommend they do it.
In this case, you got a nice bike for $800, the deal sounds fair for all involved.

I totally agree with you on every word. But it also depends on what we are talking about. In this thread we touched the watch topic and it is a little different - easy and cheap to ship, some of them are unique and the buyer usually knows what he wants and what he is bying.
But in the case of bikes - for last two years I sold and bought more than a dozen of bikes and ebay was never involved
And in some cases you can't simply find something similar on ebay (1989 GT GTB, Pinarello Lungavita, 17 y.o Bianchi in brand new condition, etc.) and in the cases like this you just need to find who needs it locally and he will not have many alternatives to bargain...
Of course, if you have 2010 Trek 1.5 for sale you will have just a liitle room to dictate anything...
P.S. as a reward for your late repsonse this is what I got out of that purchase - some yellow pieces added...and yetsrday I changed brake pads to Kool Stops.
