1983 Trek 500

Going to check out a 1983 Trek 500 to use for commuting and touring. What's it worth? Looks like it has been restored, I know it has a replaced Sun Tour rear derailleur (not the original), no brake hoods, and no seat tube decal. Seller is asking $195.

It should be a good buy if it's ready to ride with no damage. I'd be willing to pay $250 for that bike, but no more.

Seems reasonable. '83 was the last year of handbuilt Treks. This would have had the seat tube Trek panel decal - wonder where that went? Repaint?

Nice frame. Original paint? Looks really plain without decals and gray paint. Price is good but my interest would be waning with 27" wheels and an uninteresting drivetrain.

So the 83 Trek 500 was awesome, but far too small for me. The seller was part flipper and part collector, and had some other bikes in his stash including an 80s Fuji Del Ray frame, which, while temping, was the same size as the 500, so too small.

In showing off his bikes, he pulled down an '83 Trek 620; he bought the frame new and on discount after it had been dinged in the shop. He wasn't intending on selling it, but I inquired and he budged so now I own a perfectly fitting 22" 620. PHIL WOOD hubs, campy brake levers, triple chainrings (I plan extended touring so this is good), Deore XT RD, Suntour shifters and FD, DiaCompe 500G brakes, and a brooks B17 that suprisingly feels great though its been broken in quite a bit by somebody else.

Its not in perfect shape. I'll need to replace bar tape and the quill bolt (or the whole quill stem) which has been rounded out. Further, theres rusting on the underside top tube causing the paint to bubble there... and some minor rusting on the head tube. I didn't notice this until after I brought it home. (FYI you can't really see the rust in the pic. the browning on the head tube is from a dirty clear sticker that I've since pulled off).

Just curious, what do you all think this is worth?!?

I paid $375. While it might be high considering the condition, this is exactly what I'm looking for given that I'll be doing extended unsupported touring (2-3 months) this spring and summer. Anything new (like a LHT) is triple that price, and I've noticed that good used touring bikes are really hard to find in my area. Plus, its got some awesome wheels.

What would you have paid??

Nice looking Trek. The stem and seatpost do move right?

The seatpost moves no problem. I haven't tried the stem; the bolt is almost round so don't want to undo it until I've got a replacement.

Nice bike, nice price too! There's been a discussion in the C & V forum about an ebay listed 620 selling at $900.

The dedicated bike addicts on this C & V forum are "professional bike snipers." Through years of experience, encyclopedic knowledge in some cases, friends, connections, and devotion to this hobby means they can and often get great deals. Therefore, what would we pay is a totally different question than what FMV is for your find.

I have an 85(?) 620, for which I paid less two years ago, and wouldn't let it go for double the money. However, you have a Brooks B-17, and that is probably worth $75 or more on its own.

Congratulations and enjoy!
