Gios Professional - Classic Italian Race Bike - $3000

https://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/va...743178683.html
Is this this thing worth $3000.
That price looks ridiculous. I was thinking maybe 1000? but more like 600-800... Kelowna isn't exactly a strong bike market.
I live in kelowna, but i'm wondering what it would take to bring this guy down.
Cheers

$3,000.00? Not a chance! The bike has been repainted meaning it is not original and original is valuable. The bike features a mismatched group set which is not all that desireable. How much is it worth would depend on where the bike is located and Vancouver is a hot market for vintage bicycles, but not as hot as the seller thinks. Top value, in my mind, would be between $800 and $1000, and even that is pushing it, in my opinion.

If you want to learn a bit more about Vintage Bicycle Value, please feel free to visit the link I just supplied. Understanding the information there, coupled with what you can learn about Vintage Bicycle Quality will help you make a wise choice when purchasing a vintage bicycle.

What would it take to bring the seller down? Perhaps a reality pill:-)

You can check out this site as well for some ideas of pricing of comparable bikes. Since its not de rosa or pinarello ect it shouldn't be worth 3000. https://sheldonbrown.com/vrbn-a-f.html

I would say around 800 since the parts are pretty valuable. But again it's a repaint so maybe even 600. Offer lower than your willing to pay. Haggle him, and if he doesn't go for it, hope no one is stupid enough to pay that much for it. Even similar top of the line bikes from colnago, bianchi, aren't going for that much.

Good Luck

Probably will not come down for a while, perhaps years. C/L and ebay are full of insane sellers, with sky high prices. These bikes do not sell, yet the sellers repost them again and again, at the same insane prices.

Buyers have the right to ask ridiculous prices, and sometimes, they do. Talking sense into them is usually a total waste of time.

Given the asking price, I'd really like to see pictures of the major components. I don't think the rear derailleur is as advertised. Chorus had a horizontal slant paralleogram but this one is a traditional vertical style. It almost looks like Victory or Triomphe but the resolution is not sufficent to say for sure. That brings everything else into question.

Having said that, it is a very desirable frame (I'd much rather have one over a Pinarello). A legimate Gios frame, even repainted, should bring close to the the posted low estimate. While Kelona is not Vancouver, it is close enough that it should not detract an interested buyer from making the trip. However, what may prevent buyers from even considering the trip is the lack of major component pictures and the misrepresentation.

The seller may have quite a bit invested in the bike which is unfortunate. As often the case, it is rare to recoup the money spent.

So it goes. Attempting to reason with the seller is useless.

This is the reason...

Maybe he bought the frame for $500 or so. Spent $500 or more on the repaint/decals/badge. Spend $750 or 1000 on the vintage parts, etc. Hoping to make a bit of a profit on the bike.

That will never happen likely. Someone asked a few months ago about a De Rosa that was priced too high on CL. Like that one, it is much too high to be able to counter with a reasonable price that they would consider for a long time. I suspect it will sit in his house for a few more years until he concedes that it was not money well spent before posting it at a reasonable price, unless desperate for some cash.

Seller is completely out of his mind. Repainted SL frame, mix of components, tires look old and rotten (and mismatched!)

Don't even waste your time. Anyone delusional enough to ask 3 grand for this bike can't be reasoned down to a realistic price (less than $1000.)

I'll mostly agree with everyone else. $3000 is pretty far out of line. I think $1000 though is not too bad if it is as described in the text. The pictures are not too useful. The 50th anniversary stuff goes for a pretty good price. I'd feel like $1000 would be a pretty fair price relative to the part out value and if I bought it that would be what I would buy it for. As a complete bike I find it unappealing. Like others have mentioned the components are a mismatch of groups and years. For a rider I would personally look for a more correct and complete bike and rideable bike. That 13-19 freewheel is going to be a killer (and I don't think Regina Extra freewheels were aluminum).

Just like others have said: Seller spent too much restoring it, wants out, and doesn't want to lose money = $3k asking price.

I've learned not to deal with sellers where FMV is less than 75% of their asking price. They have their reasons, I'm sure, but you'll never get them to move to a reasonable amount.
