ID Cycles Gitane Performance 80's (?)
Had a friend's uncle give me his old bike that was sitting in storage. I believe he said he bought it in the 80's but I cannot contact him to confirm.
I'm not really interested in selling - I'm more interested in fixing it up. If it is worth something I would like to get help from someone who knows what they are doing (so I don't mess it up) otherwise I'll make a learning project out of it.
I've been looking online to get an idea of what year the bike is so I can get parts accordingly or fix up the existing ones but I don't think I know enough to ID exactly.

Down tube sticker - "Tubi speciali in acciaio al carbonio maganese" (as best I can tell)

Wheel sticker - "700c Mavic (Mauic?) Module E"

Crank - "Nervar"

So I guess bottom line - is it worth it to try and fix up, either myself or through a shop?
I'm new to biking and currently have a mountain bike but would like something more road-ish. So I was thinking either I'd fix this up or save up for a new one.
Thanks in advance!

Lower mid range 80's Gitane with decent frame tubing. A solid rider for sure. If cleaned up really well and no rust is found on the frame and the paint and graphics are close to perfect, overhauled to replace wear items like tires, tubes, cables and brake pads if they are worn out and all bearings serviced, you could be looking at a bike that can sell up to 200 bucks in the hottest markets.....Oh, just remember to take off the "safety" brake levers if you can, as that usually gives buyers a signal to offer a cheap price for the bike....

This would be a fine bike to fix up and ride to try out road biking. It has a good quality frame and good quality components. I'd fix it up and ride it. It's a nice vintage bike.

I picked up one of these yesterday with campy components, and an out of whack rear rim. I think it could be repaired but the bike shop did not have the tool to remove the cassette from the rim.
I will get a pic up later. I am not sure the age of the campagnolo derailleur.

I just picked up an 1985 Gitane Performance yesterday. Very good shape for a 30 year old bike. Do have to replace a broken front derailleur. Took about 16 hours of work to get it cleaned up and ride-able. Took it for a short trip today and I think I am going to like the bike.
The people I know who can value these vintage bikes say it is probably worth $400, give and take.
