Schwinn Prelude late 80's
hello folks,
I found another thread on this model but the bike I am looking at has been modified a bit so I would like your opinion. The price seems a bit steep to me, but I am not sure what offer to make without low balling the guy.
I plan to keep the bike nearly as is but to change the handle bar to have a more straight up position for commuting.

They are desireable bikes and hard to find. Two members here are currently seeking the same bike, but smaller size. If you're tall enough, go for it. Looks clean, might try for high $200's.

I recently picked up two Schwinns, a 1987 Tempo and Super Sport for a lot less, but they aren't pristine and need new rubber and an overhaul. If I sold them, which is unlikely, I would expect close to $300.
If you do change the handlebars, just pull the stem and cables, don't take off the bar tape and levers, they'd be valuable if you resell the bike down the road.
You can get high quality bars, stem, levers, grips and new cables for $75 total.

Sold one just like it (same XL size). Took me two freakin years to sell. Kept discounting it, sold it for $200.
I only sell bikes fully refurbished, so it was similar to better condition.
Price too high given component grade (decent but nothing special) and huge size.
If it were a smaller size, $250. I've sold quite a few Preludes.

yes I think $350 is a bit steep, he said he won't go lower than $300, but I also see a couple of other prelude in the seattle area for significantly less. I am also concerned that it might be hard to resell because of the frame size.

Fit trumps price. The grey bike needs an overhaul, figure $175. The black bike paint is in bad shape, full of scrapes and chips, and too small if your looking at a 25" frame.

Three fifty is pushing it for a larger framed road bike... I'd say 250 tops, and that counts the Seattle market into the figuring. 300 is dreamland on most larger framed bikes, unless they're touring, track, or very top of the line models.
