Classic Schwinn appraisal

Okay so I bought a Schwinn on CL for 80 bucks and put new tires and breaks on it. I was going to resell it for 100 bucks but then I had people yelling at me telling me that it is worth thousands. I was wondering what everyone thinks. it is a Schwinn Varsity with new blue grip tape, and custom blue pedals. Thank you!

I dont think anyone actually thought it was worth thousands. here, in Wildcat Country, that bike would fetch 100-150 on cl.

Hi. I've bought a number of old Schwinn 10-speeds in the past 6 months, and the top price I've gotten is $125. I generally pay no more than 60 bucks for them, but they've got to have good chrome and decent tires, minimal rust is okay, but if it doesn't come off the rims with my fingernail and there's much pitting on the chrome, I don't buy them. A few rusty nuts and bolts are okay, I've got tons of those. In the market where I am, any Schwinn bike, no matter the condition, won't sell if it's over $125, and even with that, you've got to post 10 to 12 photos of all the details on it, and write up a whole list of the individual components.

A new "break" on an old Schwinn would likely devalue the bike, but a new "brake" may add value.

Those are SOLD ebay transactions, not listings. You've seen the 4-5 local DKO's and other non-value added hoarders on Detroit CL who in some cases have their listings up for a year or more, in such garden spots as Shelby/Utica, Garden City, Ferndale, & Warren. What a waste of everyone's bandwidth!

That is an 1974 Opaque Blue 24" frame Varsity Sport with Fenders. In good condition they can fetch between $50 to $150, possibly a little higher in some markets. The original fenders are a bonus and may be the key to a higher price on this one.

...it is a Schwinn Varsity with new blue grip tape, and custom blue pedals.
Note that to people who collect old Schwinns having the original pedals (and other parts) would be worth more than "custom blue" ones.
