Eddy Merckx Corsa 01 1998 Value

Hi there,

I am new to the forums so hope i have provided all the info needed.

I have an old steel Eddy Merckx Corsa 01 that has been in storage for the last 8 years. A bike mechanic told me that I should be able to sell it for some decent cash but I have no idea what it is worth. Can anyone help?

Details:
Eddy Merckx Corsa 01 1998 Navy Blue
Shimano Ultegra Components
Mavic Open Wheels

It was built for me by a bike shop in Sydney, Australia in 1998. It has some scratches on the frame and the right shifter needs repaired.

Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forums.

Nice Merckx.

Before I say a price, is that a scratch on the tt or a scratch and dent?

Very desirable frame in a popular size and color. Frame value in very good condition probably in the $700+ range, total bike as is probably in the $1K range. You could probably get more if in perfect and rideable condition but the older 9 speed 6500 series Ultegra holds back the value for some potential buyers who would be more interested in Dura Ace or Campy (not to denigrate Ultegra, I have a Merckx Century with Ultegra 6700 10 speed myself).

In any case, rub out the scratch as best as possible with polishing compound and wax the frame. If selling whole then detail the entire bike and take exceptional pictures, post on eBay with a BIN and be patient.

You'll get best dollar by parting out, especially since the right shifter needs attention (and probably requires replacement since they are pretty much unservicable). Figure $700 for the frame, $200 for the wheelset, $250 for the Ultegra stuff with the clugy right shifter and $100 or so for the stem, bars and sadlle.

That is a very handsome bike. I'd ride the hell outta that sucker.

Really awesome bike! Yes you can get some great cash for it.

If you have experience and good seller feedback on ebay you can part it out. Or you could even start by selling the little stuff first and selling the frame last.

Otherwise just sell it whole. Clean it but IMO I wouldn't bother servicing it, as the next buyer may have a specific component group in mind and your efforts would be wasted. Instead, be honest about the mechanical condition and mention that it hasn't been used or serviced in 8 years or whatever.

Yep.

This is great info.

Don't forget the WD40 trick on that sti.

I've saved a few of these units that way.

Thanks all for your help and advice. I am now in two minds about whether to sell it or replace the shifter and keep it.

Thanks again. Happy new year to all
