Cannondale 1989 SR 400 Criterium
Hi all,
I know I have been making too many threads and asking for your opinions too much. But, I could not find any info on this bike with the search feature, or Google. I hope this is my last 'opinion' thread.
I had seen this Cannondale and thought it was too far away to purchase, but, I actually have a trip coming up and I will be nearby, so, I am going to go look. The seller agreed to hold it for me. I really like the looks of it, and I read the group set should be reliable. Should be plenty for what I need.
I heard I should look for cracks, where should I look? Any info on other components, or just the bike in general is greatly appreciated. Also, how much should I pay? It is very, very clean.

Close to mint condition, red and white paint, hand made in the USA, 3.0 series aluminum Criterium 12 speed racing frame/road bike. The group set is Shimano Exage Sport LX, drop bars are ITM Italy, Maillard hubs France, Alesa rims Belgium, tires Continental Super Sport Ultra 700 x 23C Germany, pedals MKS AR-23 Japan. The bike has been fully serviced, hub bearings, bottom bracket bearings and head tube/fork bearings all clean and lubed. New cables and housings thru out and the bars are fresh taped. The bike is original and in top condition, very light, very fast and has never been dropped or crashed. It's had very light use spent most of it's life in a garage, needs nothing. It's a real head turner with styling that was way ahead of it's time and very much anticipated how bikes would look in the years to come. The stand over height is 32" ideal rider height would be around 5"6" to 5'10". I'm 6"2" and have a 32" inseam but my upper body is too long. This is a great starting bike for someone just getting into serious road bikes, commuting, racing, triathlon. Check the photos it's a lot of bike for the money and a very sweet vintage bike as well.

I was a Cannondale dealer in the 80s. SR400 was a low end bike. the 500 had 105, the 600 had shimano 600 and so on.
I had a SR900 with Campy Athena.

They used the same frame throughout the line. Weather you had a SR 300 or a SR 2000 top of the line the frame was the same. Very stiff and very light for its day. You can hammer on it and the bike just goes..However for some it can be a harsher ride. I am looking for a 60cm frame now to build up...80s vintage

The understatement of the day.
My CAAD3 with 23mm tires was uncomfortable for rides longer than an hour or so. 25mm tires really didn't have enough clearance, but I used them anyway. It was light (for the times) and it was very quick handling, typical crit style racer.

Nice bike --- I paid $300 for one in similar condition 3 or 4 years ago --- it had the 600 component group, but i think with bikes this old, condition and number of hours on the machine are more important than the groupset if the frame is the same
Over the winter i picked up a '92 model 2.8 series Criterium for $225 that was in a little more "distressed" condition (not rough, but not stored properly either)
I'd think 300 bucks would be the sweet spot , but even if you bit at $400 -- still is a much better bike than you can get for $400 off a showroom today , as long as it doesnt need a new cassete/chain and tires ---
