If its a valuation you are looking for, I'd say at least my left testicle, maybe both.

Yeah, a valuation would be nice. I think it looks great, and we're aflutter with excitement and all. But in looking over the C&VWIW threads, I learn that tandems are a 'difficult sell', due to shipping and two sizes, so they don't go for what they ought, as seen on this apparently long defunct JT price guide. Evidenced as well that the tandem has been available for several months, and so has languished a bit.

Used tandems are some of the best deals out there. I see them languish all the time on CL. They're a bear to ship and you need to find typically a couple who (a) want the bike and (b) fit the bike. Talk about finding a needle in a haystack from the S's point of view.

Buy it. Sell the crank set on ebay and your net cost will be 1k or so, maybe much less. Selling the cranks any buying replacements will net you about $4-500. To the good.
Tandems go cheap, big tandems go cheaper.

Tandems are a funny market - and they take a while to sell. Vintage tandems are particularly hard to sell because most of them have cramped stoker positions and are flexier than more modern ones. That will be less true of a JT. Often they sell for far less than the value of their parts.

The flip side is that they're also hard to find in the right size, so the seller has some leverage too.

This one is really hard to value. It's beautiful and top end; if someone told me they paid 2500, I'd think it was good value. At the same time it wouldn't suprise me if it sold for under $1,000. With tandems it's worth what it's worth to you. It will be hard to sell on the back end as well.

If I had to throw out a number, assuming the seller doesn't want to sit on it, 1500.

What's his asking price?

A quick scan says parts alone are worth 1000+, but part values don't seem to drive complete tandem values.
