Peugeot Vitesses 12 Speed 531
Hi guys new here..
I`ve dug out an old bike from me fathers garage he rode John o groats to lands end in the early eighties on it.. i`m wondering if its worth doing up or just scraping it.
Peugeot Vitesses 12 Speed
Reynolds 531 tubes Pearl paint job chrome forks
Peugeot stronglight cranks and drilled rings
Peugeot front mech
Huret rear mech
Weinmann brakes
Spidel leavers
Peugeot bars and stem
lightrace headset
I cant find any serial numbers on the frame. Its a bit grubby but the wheels are still true and the gears all shift but new cables will make it better
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK??
cheers now mark

It's probably a nice bike since 531 tubing wasn't used for entry-level models. Assuming it's not completely rusted out or irreparably damaged, it deserves better than the scrap heap. It could even be valuable, depending on the particular model and condition. Post some pics and we can tell you more.
If you post pics, make sure they show components and details. Crankset, derailleurs, 531 decals, the frame dropouts (where the rear wheel inserts), etc.

incazzare.
Strange that it has a derailleur claw and that crummy derailleur on a 531 bike... It also looks like an 80's bike to me, but that Reynolds decal looks older. Hmm. I don't know enough about Peugeots to say.

That's a nice bike! Condition is rough though. It could be a variety of models, Peugeot had an amazingly confusing (to me) naming scheme. But I can tell you it's from the early 1980s.
I just bought a similar 531 Peugeot in slightly better condition for $200. And I think I got a good deal. I'd say yours is worth somewhere around there as-is.

I'm thinking maybe a 1982 PKN10. Early '80s decal scheme, right crankset, chrome fork, 531 frame, available in pearl silver.
It's a really nice bike, but in rough cosmetic shape. It should clean up nicely with a thorough teardown, clean/lube, and rebuild. Touch-up paint matching might be hard. As-is, I'd offer you $200 and hope you took it.
DEFINITELY not one for the scrap heap!

I would agree that based on the marking and pearl paint it is an early 80's mid level model. As for value I would say around $175-200 as is and $300 or so fixed up and ready to ride. This bike is definetley worth saving with a new set of tires and some clean up and serviceit would make a nicebut cosmeticaly rough rider without a lot of work.

Hi, Mark-
Your Dad's bike is an early 80s Peugeot Competition with the chromed 531 fork option. On the top tube under the green tape should be black script that reads Competition. Nice Stronglight 104bis crankset as well. The Huret Duopar is after market. The original derailleur would have been a Simplex LJ 1000 to match the brazed on front Simplex/Spidel. Definitely a keeper if it fits.

Make sure you re-grease the bottom bracket and headset (and hubs) before you do any real riding on it. If those parts are French threaded they will be hard to find/expensive so you don't want to ruin them by riding on 30 year old grease!

But I do find it weird that the bike has a Huret Derailleur, as you'd expect a Simplex on a Peugeot of this vintage.

Not a good idea to respray it. The bike is worth more with the original paint job and the bike should, as others have pointed out, clean up nicely. Very nice PKN 10 with my favorite paint job (white with orange lettering): this is a classic bike.

The headset and bottom bracket are likely French threaded but you will have to take them apart to be sure. See also: French Bicycles
