Yet another Schwinn (Traveler)

There are a couple of Schwinn Travelers in my area that I'm looking into. For reference, I would just like to have a sturdy, slightly more comfortable than average road or commuter bike to get me around Chicago.

The first I found is a Traveler that's been made into a hybrid, which appeals to me. Pricey at $200. Are the modifications worth it? Schwinn World Traveler Bike

Then there's this one, which is $160: SCHWINN TRAVELER 12 SPEED ROAD BIKE CHRO MOLY FRAME MINT SHAPE!!

I really don't know anything about bikes, but don't want to get scammed by craigslisters! Esp since I feel Chicago has some inflation in prices. Any help would be much appreciated.

The first one is a '72/73 model and is worth about $50. It is also considered a "ladies'" bike with a step-through frame. The second one is a much newer ('80s) and a better bike overall, however I wouldn't pay over $75 to $100 for it either.

Somebody else in Chicago was looking for a commuter bike in your size. I gave some suggestions on their thread (reply #8 in https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...road-bike.html ) and I'll cut and paste them here. I included the $160 Traveler you posted.

I agree with Metacortex- the green bike is a stinker and the Traveler is overpriced. But a look though the Chicago craigslist showed me that all these bikes are pricey. Maybe that's what the market is like there. I'm betting that once we get some warmer weather, selection will improve and hopefully prices come down.

Maintenance and consumables like tires, bar tape, ect represent a hidden cost on old bikes like these. If a bike has been reconditioned with new greased bearings and new rubber, suddenly a higher price looks reasonable. That could make the $150 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe (an '83 if you're curious) a decent value. Still, why couldn't they put the chain back on the rings before snapping their photos? And that saddle has to go! :]

The importance of getting a frame that fits you cannot be overemphasized, and those are pretty small frames.

If it doesn't fit correctly, you won't be comfortable and won't ride the bike. Make sure it fits before purchase.
