English touring bike around 1990 with 28" tires ?

I've picked another unknown English touring bike in a box of bits so no photos just now, its no classic but lug frame & 10 speed, friction shifters on down tube, I guess around 1990 + - very surprised to see the tires are marked 28” X 1 5/8 I thought these sizes went out with the Sturmey Archer 3 speed, & old single speed roadster bikes. Appreciate the tires are not original, but they obviously fit the rims & frame.

Were 28” still in use around this time on touring bikes ?

Appreciate all replies & comments

Thanks

Friction shifting and 1990? I highly doubt it if it is original.

Well, I see you are in Malaysia, so I guess it is possible. Count the speeds too. Ten speed = ten speed rear cogs = I highly doubt it.

I'll reword it:-

its 10 speed but its 5 speed rear freewheel & double on crank, sorry for mist-understanding certainly not 10 speed as per modern racing bikes.

The friction shifters are braze on its an older frame, rear brake cable via eyelets on top tube.

In Malasia, who knows? It was not at all common in the US, nor England at that time.

"28 x 1-5/8" is an alternate designation for 700C (622mm rim) wheels. I think you're thinking of "28 x 1-1/2" which indeed was the English roadster size: Tire Sizing Systems

Sounds like a pretty typical late 70's early 80's mid level road bike based on the description of nicely lugged frame and 5x2 ten speed gearing with 700c wheels. Also referred to as 28inch in Imperial sizing if you look close most tires have booth the 700c and 28inch markings.

Thanks for the comments

The tires are Kenda Taiwan, not the best but a lot better than some now on the market, obviously these have been changed during the bike's life, its possible they last owner upped the size from maybe 1" 3/8 the inside rim width is .9" its just I cannot remember in my younger days seeing tires like that on touring bikes, anything in those days with 2 x 5 speed was considered a sports / racer.
