1989 Olmo - yeah, the same old question...value?
An older gentleman is interested in a vintage Italian road bike and wondered about this 1989 OLMO he saw on craigslist. I have plenty of experience with Colnago, Pinarello and Bianchi, but unfortunately, not this classic brand. May I please solicit some opinions on its value?
It was described as "near mint", and indeed the pics look pretty good!
The specs: Frame- Columbus SL tubing; Headset- Shimano 600
Brakes/levers/derailleurs- Shimano Santé; Wheelset- Mavic Helium w/Michelin Carbon 700C tires; Bars- Cinelli; Seat post- Shimano 600; Saddle- Bontrager RL (that definitely needs to be vintage-swapped!)
Thanks in advance for any help!

I am just going to toss this out there but I would say $500ish. Olmos are good solid bikes but they don't have the following of some bikes.
I recently sold a mostly complete Sante group (no HS, BB or rings but hubs) for $300 so considering the helium wheels the group is worth around $350-400ish. Most any decent SL frame will run $250-500 depending on condition and brand.
Nice looking bike if I had the extra $500 I'd be looking at it.

$1000 is silly high for this bike. $600. $750 would be tops. Add a premium for a red hot market (PA is not red hot). $1000 for an Italian bike = Campagnolo equipped, and one of the top brands (Colnago, etc.). Olmo plus Shimano = not in that league.
Missing Sante headset which is too bad, as it is the coolest Sante piece of the group IMHO.
Very attractive bike, so if I was interested, I would keep an eye on it, maybe make an offer at the top of my range. I had a similar situation, I ended up making what I thought was a strong offer, but low compared to asking price. About a month later, seller took my offer.
If I was a buyer, realize $750 gets me an entry level, made in China, aluminum frame bike. So the value is here, even though the price is not realistic.

I would agree that this is a very good looking bike and likely a great rider. Yet as others have said you just don't see Italian bikes selling for $1000 from a lesser known maker with Shimano components. I would say $600 is a fair price and with the hot market and great cosmetics I could see maybe $700. I would not be in too much of a hurry on this one it will likely be on the market for a long time I see bikes like this listed locally in most markets for months if not a year or more without selling.
