Hi everyone,

Just had a Colnago frame come up for sale near me.

What is a fair price for it?

The seller is after $420.

The seller is selling "as is". Guessing the forks are not original?

I'm thinking the price is too high but I'm not familiar with Colnago prices.

Any input appreciated.

Edit: Does it even look like a genuine Colnago? The more I look the more I doubt it.

That's not a Colnago. $420, that's what he's smoking. I wouldn't pay $20 for that.

Messaged the seller whether they are certain it's a genuine Colnago and if it has any pantographs.

As far as I know, none (or very few) of the classic Colnago frames had front and rear eyelets. The fork is definitely not a Colnago fork. By the time the frames had under bottom bracket cable routing and water bottle bosses, they should also have had colnago pantographs on the seat stays. Upper and lower head tube lugs should also have the clover cut-outs, as well as the upper seat tube lug. It is possible they aren't visible with the repaint, but usually owners hilight them.

You probably have a mid-quality mystery Japanese frame. Repainted at some point.

You might confirm the Japanese origin based on the brand of dropouts, and bottom bracket compatibility.

Is the rear rim Carbon Fiber or Aluminum? It appears to have 32 straight-gauge spokes, so not terribly high quality.

You might get close to $100 for the frame, fork, headset, handlebars, seat, rear wheel, and tire but it is probably closer to $50.

The price $550 in AUD is roughly $420 USD.

I would say the back rim is a very cheap one.

Only after starting the thread did I realise it looks more Japanese than Italian.

To be honest I wouldn't even consider purchasing a mystery Japanese frame with different forks and especially with it trying to be a Colnago.

Update: Seller said there are only numbers on the BB. I guess that confirms it is Japanese?

I told the seller that it is most likely a Japanese frame but they don't agree and insisted that it is indeed a genuine Colnago.

Can only imagine what a buyer would feel after discovering their "Colnago" isn't what they thought it was!

Sellers like this are either morons or purposely trying to deceive people. Often both. Run away and do not tolerate crap like this.

I'd pay maybe $20-30 for what's in the ad if it fit me and I had a good use for the frame. But I would be very careful to check the front end of the frame for crash damage.

+10 Seller is looking for a fish to buy this crap. Don't be that fish. Watch for other deception from this seller.

+10 On the other hand, seller may just be an idiot. He sees the label, does a quick google search, and think he has a gold mine.

The photos aren't too great, but it looks like the bike has had some wear since the decals were put on.

Perhaps the seller was duped to thinking he had a genuine Colnago, and now some years later, doesn't want to hear differently. Perhaps he overpaid for the very poor quality clone.

Judging by the amount of items the seller has up for sale I think they bought it cheap thinking it was a genuine Colnago and wanted to do a quick flip.

Hard to believe they still insist that it is genuine and don't want to hear otherwise.

Don't think I would even take it for free as the whole thing has a very shady looking history.

I was talking to a "bike flipper" who would go to the local auction and pick up bikes. Not well displayed, often cheap (depending on the number of bidders), and probably mostly JUNK. So, I could imagine the seller snagging what he thought was a Colnago, perhaps over-bidding on it, and not really knowing what he had.

Or, perhaps he thinks you're trying to lowball him by convincing him that his prize is phony.

I have some Colnago stickers I'd like to sell somebody for $200. You must promise me you will not stick them on a Huffy or Univega etc. and try to flip it for more than $420.

(This is a joke - I have no stickers for sale, figured I better say it's a joke that since some folks get really over-animated sometimes when they don't understand dry humor).

I think the Huffy and Schwinn trademarks have been bought out by the Chinese or Taiwanese, so they are essentially "fakes"

Actually, I've been meaning to start brazing, and one of the first things I have planned is to disassemble my Colnago and use it as a pattern for my jig. It wouldn't take much to add some clover leaves, but I think I'd rather put my own name on my own bikes.
