Identify a Raleigh 3 speed

This is in the local buy and sell.
Is it just a Sport with drop bars? Any better than a normal Raleigh, worth going to have a look at?

32/40 spokes; decals looks older; has what looks like the Raleigh Hi tensile tubing decal; still has the pulley - even if it is just a sport it looks interesting. How much?

Slash5 05-23-15 08:57 AM

$175 so unless it is something special, top dollar.
Ad says 27 inch wheels but they look like normal 26 in the picture.

If it were in complete original condition with all parts (fenders, chainguard, saddle, bars) it would be worth that. Right now it's worth whatever someone will give him for it. $50 if you like the color and want the parts.

+1 - I was thinking it is worth it for $25-50

The do look like the original deep bend club style steel bars from the late 40's/early 50's models.

I'm sure they are worth $50 just for that. But is that a bend in the down tube or just funky lighting?

BigChief 05-23-15 05:17 PM

It appears to be a 50s frame too. Nice color. But the wheels, seat, chainguard and fenders are gone.

If your Sport had new tires and you were patient, perhaps in NYC, but it would be a challenge near Brewster/Poughkeepsie, probably more like $100-$120.

No, yours is actually much nicer. Let me amend that to be "close to original condition." I'd expect mine to be worth about $175.

This bike is from the 70's , based on the chain ring, pulley down by the bottom bracket, and no pump peg. Many people (like me) think cost cutting at Raleigh make bikes from this era way less reliable and durable then the 50's bike in the first photo.

Some export "club" Sports models came without chain guards, like the Lenton sports and Clubman models around 50.

It kinda looks like a Trent Sports from the '50s:

BigChief 05-24-15 04:41 AM

If it was a Trent model, that would explain the Endrick rims and change things for me. But I don't see fluted crank arms. I would check the frame for signs of chainguard clamps being attached at some point. If there were no signs of a chainguard ever being attached and the SA hub was dated from the mid 50s, it might be a 150 dollar bike. Maybe they used standard cranks on Trents at some point. If they did, this bike would only be missing the seat and fenders.

zukahn1 05-24-15 10:13 AM

Might just be the pic but the frame looks bent. It's a sport with 26 inch wheels and a lot of missing parts and funky setup cabling. In its current shape not much value IMHO $75 or so as a parts project bike if it's 50's less if its 60's or later model.
