70's Vintage Gitane Road Bike

Can anyone give me an idea of what model this Gitane is and also its approximate resale value? I bought it new in 1975. The seat and frame are in good shape, but it needs a lot of cleaning and restoration. Thanks!

Hello cubsgirl,

What you have looks to be a Gitane Gran Sport or Gypsy.

In the mid seventies Gitane changed the name of their base model from Gran Sport to Gypsy.

The Royal Asport I owned didn't say 'Gitane' anywhere on it. I have a vague memory that it had a 'Custom Made' decal like the low end Gitane I owned later.

Try selling it for $50 but, don't take less than $35. Or, donate it to a bike co op and claim $150 charity on your taxes next year.

Hi juvela,

Gitane bought out Royal Asport and once in awhile you'll see a Gitane decaled as a Royal Asport.

I've seen entry model and top model Gitanes labeled as Royal Asports.

Royal Asport was a marque and not necessarily a model name.

The OP's bike, to be more precise, looks to be a 74/75 Gitane Gypsy model.

I have seen these with HF hubs w/qr and LF hubs w/nuts.

Bikes: No-name LH drive track. Also ride an Exxon Graftek, a Masi, a Trek R200 or a RR Boneshaker for fun!

Sell the wrench and cyclometer separately on eBay. Don't give them away.
