1980(?) Nishiki Continental with Campagnolo, Modolo, O.M.A.S and Ofmega components

Hello All,

This is my first post as I just got into the vintage bike restoration hobby yesterday. I looked at an old Sekine (like the one I had in the 80's) last summer hanging in a relatives garage but he was not interested in parting with it. Then as luck would have it my neighbor was moving yesterday and rolled this old bike out of his shed. I enquired about it and told him I'd been thinking about restoring one. He told me he'd had it for many years (bought from original owner) and it has been unridden for the past 5-10 years. He said it was a "high-end" bike in it's time. Long story short, I helped him patch some marks in his walls and he gave me the bike.

After a bit of research on the internet and a lot of information from this forum I think this may be a pretty decent find. It's in great shape overall but needs a good cleaning. The attached pics are straight out of the shed (he turned the bars for storage). It has a CJ serial number which I believe means 1980. It seems to be a decent build. I'm not sure if this was available from factory or if it was a custom build. It has the following components:
Campagnolo Rally derailleurs (and saddle)
Modolo Pro brakes
Araya rims
O.M.A.S. hubs
Ofmega crank

I can't wait to clean it up and take it for a ride. I'm not interested in selling it but am curious what the value of this bike is and any info someone might have on the build spec (factory or custom).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Enjoy the restoration and the riding. As you learn about your bike, I think most of the wags here will agree that this is a bike where the sum of the parts is worth well more than the bike as a whole. For example, the rear derailleur alone is worth $125. The triple crank, while worn, is rare too.

Thanks oddjob2. As I continue to research and learn I see what you mean about the sum of the parts. As far as I can tell this bike seems to be quite a nice build for its time with some rare(ish) components. Safe to assume this was not a factory build?

Its over 30 years old. Many bicyclists routinely changed components over the years. When I find a 30 year old bike with all original parts, its usually because the owner rarely/never rode it. Bikes that get ridden get tweaks, sometimes to better fit rider, sometimes because the owner preferred other parts, sometimes just for the heck of it. Bikes that get such changes almost always do better on a part out.

And far as a factory "custom", realize Nishiki was a marking company, not a bicycle building company (no factory).

My guess is that bike did not originally come with a triple crankset. So the derailleur was probably changed to accommodate the triple crank.

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.
