Today's Special: Apollo Gran Tour
Kuwahara Apollo Gran Tour, (circa 1985 ?)
Another tossed-out low-end rescue bike, sadly neglected, but it actually rides MUCH better than it looks. I took it out for a ride today in the rain and I think it is worth wiping down with Varsol and spending the price of a can of blue spray paint. I've probably had half-a-dozen or more Apollo bikes from the 1980s over the years and have found them generally above average. This is not a Fred Deely bike : it has the brass CD (Cochrane-Dunlop) head badge and was sold through the DC sporting goods store in Toronto.
Under the grime the fit and finish look good.
In fact, after an hour's worth of non-cosmetic clean up (air in the tired tires, fresh grease in wheel bearings, fresh grease in BB, new gear cables) it actually rides really better than a comparable Raleigh. The crusty Raleigh Racing tires had their last spin today....
Araya alloy rims
Sunshine alloy hubs,
Maxy alloy crank arms
Alloy chain rings
Nice Suntour derailleurs
GB stem
Mafac Racer brakes
Sakae alloy bars
Kuwahara frame

Hi Binky,
interesting bike.
Are you sure the frame was built by Kuwahara? The Kuwahara serial number format is unique. The serial number for Kuwahara frames is usually on the seat tube, non-drive side, lower down. The serial nuber will tell the year and month of manufacture.
A picture of the headbadge would also be interesting.
