Late 1980s GT Karakoram

Hi All,
First time poster but have been lurking for a while. I found a vintage late 1980's GT Karakoram on Craigslist for $160. However I have my doubts if its a real or if counterfeit. and If real is it $160 a fair price for one?

My main worry is that I've googled 1988 GT karakoram's and none of the labels look as plain as this one (almost as if stenciled on).

Here are some pictures:

Also, if its real, is the Tange cromo tubing used for the entire frame or just parts of it?

Any help is much appreciated!

Hmmm. Oldest GT I've had was a 1989, and it didn't have decals like that.

I'd guess repaint, if anything.

Definitely a GT. May or may not be a Karakoram. GT was probably the only company that made Hellenic stay frames with Ubrakes up on 'em.

I think it's newer than 1989. It could be counterfeit but why would somebody bother counterfeiting a Karakoram. I have a 1989 Karakoram in the garage that I bought new. Grey splatter paint with Mountain (deore) LX group and thumb lever shifters. Logo and cockpit look nothing like your pictures and your shifters look like newer push button. Mid grade bike back then, maybe higher in GTs catalog. Built like a tank, rides like a stretched limo and bunny hops like a tandem. Rear stays barely had enough clearance for 1.95 tires which was a major drawback with these bikes. Why I still have it I'll never know but if someone says they're actually worth something it will be on Craigslist tomorrow!

Compare your Karakoram to the one I had a few years ago...

Yours should have this on the back end of the top tube, if it is a real GT...

I should add that they are pretty nice bicycles. I gave mine to B4H a couple of years ago.

Not a Blaze or Edge, but definitely lowend Suntour. XCE or XCM I reckon.
