I know Trek 728's are nice, desirable bikes but for a comparison I just bought a 1982 614 and paid $150. It's not top of the line but it's a decent bike (it also has caliper brakes).
Edit: I mean the 614 is not top of the line. The 728 is, I believe.

It doesn't look like it has cantilever brakes on it. That would make it a tough deal for me. It would have to be practically NOS. Around $600 would be a better deal.

I had an '82 go through my hands. No canti brakes, 700c wheels. 1 size too small. I think it went for $450 on CL. It was nice.

you have a lot better options at that price point.

Fuji is another great example. The later Team Fuji and Opus III models are fantastic bikes. but they just don't command that premium.

Yes if you are talking early to late 80's. Unless it was the rarer than hens teeth Trek 170. I would probably drop some coins on a Domane.
I had an Opus III that was a hair too small. Superbee and pretty paint.

I can't quite tell, but it looks like the 728 posted has the extremely rare Gran Compe 450 centerpull brakes, which would probably sell for $250 or more. $900 for the whole bike... oh, I don't know. I sure would like the brakes, though.
