Trek 970
I'm looking at this 970 for my nephew.
It appears to be in decent condition. One owner.
Says it has "little scrapes here and there that are a little rusted, Nothing big".
All stock but bars.
The seller is asking $150.
Your thoughts.
Thank you.

I am having trouble opening those huge pic files. I think $150might be OK depending on the condition.

The asking price is reasonable, if it is in good condition and the right size. Make the seller an offer. It looks to be in better condition than the PDG70 I paid $150- for earlier this year.

Still learning
I will need a microdot reader if the pics were any smaller. If the paint is in good shape well worth $150.

Thank you. Guess I need to work on my photo uploading. I thought I use to be able to just copy and paste.

I like the top end lugged vintage Trek MTBs. If this is in good shape, this is a very reasonable deal. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

970 deserves a premium for someone that will appreciate it. $150 is reasonable, if it looks OK in person.
I reluctantly sold my 950 from the same era. It was just a tad too small. Great bike.
Pictures are worthless as far as passing any judgment on this particular bike. But you should be able to evaluate it fully in person and make the right decision either way.

One thing it didn't have were decals regarding the frame tubing.
Thank you all for your help.

Go for it...very fair. While it's hard to get big money for these, it's increasingly hard to find bikes like this at low pricing. I think the market will adjust to that fact (and has to an extent already). I think it's a great bike for the money.

That is a sweet bike. Many people will say that the technology from the higher end groups like XT and DX 'trickles down' to the lower end parts, which is sort of true - the number of speeds, the shifter function, etc. trickles down, but the quality does not. A DX hub set will last a long long time, as will an XT derailleur. Cheaper stuff will work well when new, but won't be too nice when it is 22 years old like that Trek. It's a real sweet find, IMHO.

What Bill said. Slicks are... well they are slick. A little tread is good.

Forté Metro ST Tire
Gatorskin is not cheap but it's 350 grams. One of the lighter tires for this use. The overview calls it a slick but it's the same as a road tire. I run 32mm GS on my "bad road" bike.

Because I ride narrower paselas all weather and (to a lesser extent) all terrain and find them to be rock solid.

Myth? I know the man is a legend; but my experiance is different. Slicks in suddenly wet conditions anywhere other than pavement are more dangerous than traditional treaded tires.

This thread is really interesting, especially the reference to Donald Trump back in 2015!!
How has the bike treated you since then? And what do you think it's worth now? I'm in the market for an old steel frame and my feeling as these nice old steel frames have increased in value since 2015.
