1984 Trek 760 appraisal ?
I recently purchased this Trek 760 with a unique paint scheme. The bike just struck me as a quality built Trek road bike and I decided to buy based on the condition and price. Would like to know what this bike is worth as a whole. I understand parting one of these road bikes would gain the most but I don't have any intention to resale right now. Curious to know what its worth in its current condition.
This 760 is believed to have an original paint/decal set not normally found on this year 760 as ordered from Trek in 1984. I have noticed the Campagnolo SR gruppo has a date on the crank arm and rear deralier of 1983. This date makes me wonder if a 1983 Trek 170 frame was replaced by this 760 frame set. Every component on this bike has the Campagnolo logo on it including the gray shift cables. The worn out brake hoods also have the Campy world logo along with the bar end caps. The original wheel set has long been replaced with different 700c rims. I have installed a vintage Mavic MA40 700c 36h wheel set with new Gatorskin tires mounted. I also replaced the black Turbo saddle with a 1981 Ideale 92 brown leather saddle. I cant find any rust on this frame. The paint is in great shape for its age. Everything looks period and original but I am no expert and I look for your opinion. Thanks in advance.

It has the Campagnolo SL pedals with Binda straps. The BB shaft is hollow, I was able to remove the crank dust cap and bolt to insert a metal rod to find this out.

Its a 60cm frame set and just my size. I am 6' tall and weigh 194 lbs. today. I've been riding for a few weeks now and have lost 10 lbs. since I started cycling.

Yes its an inexpensive way to step into a top of the line class road bike even if its vintage. I took the bike to a local shop to see if it needed any maintenance besides the chain cleaning. They couldn't find any issued with the components/bearings and only recommended new brake hoods and possible new cables due to age. No wear on the rear 6 cogs and the SEDIS chain had 25% wear. This wheel set is true and the bike rides and shifts smooth. I guess as long as I keep things maintained it should always be worth $500-$600 and shouldn't be a tough sell in the future.
The bike mechanic was pleased to see a 30 y/o bike in this condition. Its a functional conversation piece that I will enjoy using. I will hang onto the black Bernard Hinault Turbo saddle and wheel set it came with. If I ever decide to sell the 760 I will remove my vintage red label Mavic MA40 clinchers/tire wheel set along with Ideale saddle. They are not original to the Trek and I could get a couple hundred more for these few items.

That's a beautiful bike; it's immaculate. Heck the saddle looks beautiful as well. I think the bike is worth more than $500-$600 particularly given the condition of the bike.
I know the mechanic said that there was no issue with the components/bearings but I'd still overhaul the bike and replace all the bearings if this has not already been done. Grease, unlike wine, doesn't get better with age.

The condition appears excellent and is worth some extra $, same with campy vs suntour. For the first time in last 5+- years vintage treks values seem to have declined some. Sold my 24in 86 trek 500 a few weeks ago for 200 locally after slowing dropping from 300+, had ebay exposure as well. Your 760 is in another league and much less common so I would think suggested value is accurate though. My size and very nice looking!

Would this frame/fork set be worth $200 ? If the complete bike will only net a $200 profit then it makes sense to keep the Campy stuff and sell this frame set. One could always use a complete SR group on a future Italian frame build.

A complete SR group in 8/10 or better condition is worth $900-ish or so.
That being said its probably a $600 bike as is.
Sometimes the whole is worth less than the sum of parts.

It sure looks like a 1983 170, maybe JohnDThompson could help out.

As for the 170 question, the 170, 760, 770 shared the same frame being a 531c having the 531 decal on the fork and Tange "trident" crown.
Run your serial number at the vintage trek site for your answer.

This is a solid $800 bike. The condition is a true "excellent" and the majority of the value in vintage bikes is in condition unless you have a legitimate rare and desirable item. Most important is that the SR parts are in excellent condition. This is especially true for a Trek which doesn't demand the most attention from collectors or those looking for high end vintage road bikes. As mentioned already, the sum of the parts is always more the the whole unless the individual parts are not that valuable or the parts are specific for the model bike. The market is high for excellent condition SR parts and you see 200-300 more

Thanks wrk101 for explaining why some vintage bikes just don't fetch a high dollar amount. I now see many newer used road bikes in the $500-$700 range and am beginning to understand. Also understanding why I see so many frame sets being offered without components. Just easier to package and ship is one of many reasons.
The serial number cheeks out with the 1984 760 60cm frame set I have. It's not a rare limited production Trek 170 as those may have shared the same frame but were constructed from 753R tubing. The 760's were made from 531P and 531C tubing I've read. This bike is as close to an 83' Trek 170 that I will ever get. My plans are to ride and enjoy it, be a good keeper till the next owner.
Thank you all for this appraisal.

That 170 is more than rare, it is almost fabled.
I love my '86 760. It is in such gorgeous condition it hangs on my wall in the bike room. It isnt my only Campy/531 bike but it is in just that kind of condition.

1983 component date codes are appropriate for a 1984 model bike.

Not unusual for Trek to take that particular disclaimer for a ride. Mine have not matched up well at all and both were from owners that didnt do era upgrades.

170s used 730 tubes and the "s/n" you have pictured is actually in referance to the bottom bracket made by tim issac so so 60tsi is a 60 degree bb shell made by tim s issac there should be another s/n on there that you can actually send in to trek and they will tell you exactly how the bike left the factory which components and so forth.

ya its super esay depending on the year the older pre90s models youe can go to Vintage Trek Bikes- Information on Steel Road Bicycles made by the Trek Bicycle Corporation, bike and get a good idea if you want to talk to trek themselves you can call the service line and they will get you to where you need to go it does take about 15-20 minutes but its worth it for your trek. theres also a guy that worked at the factory who kept a journal on all the "special" bikes that left the factory i cant remember what his name was. go ahead and give it a try and keep us posted.

My 760 is not a brochure poster child. It has a 12/84 braze date, full Campy NR, '86 paint and '85 Modolo brakes. Being '86 was the last year of that model it is no surprise it has a batch of parts bin componentry that was plucked from other model lines. Thanx for the tip on calling them.
