De Rosa Trophee

I made an offer on the bike. Where does the Trophee stand in the hierarchy of De Rosa. Bike looks mostly original.

It's a De Rosa...there really weren't models at this point. It looks quite clean...offer 1500 and see what happens.

I'm not so sure that seller will budge on prices if you offer any less. The bikes he's "selling for a widow" have been listed on CL for a month without a price change.

I don't remember seeing that color, but I'm also not sure it's a repaint. The thickness looks right and it has chrome accents. If it's a repaint it's a good one.

I think the price is ambitious...especially for someone not familiar with high end bikes.

Anybody else suspicious of this sellers name, "stoker-sprocket"? With a name like that, it sounds like he knows a thing or two about bikes, yet he says he knows nothing and the bike is from an estate sale. And look at that list of particulars he listed about the bike! For somebody that doesn't know about bikes, he seems to know a lot about bikes!

Not a deal breaker, but I'm not sure this seller is being honest with us...

There's definitely something not adding up with his listings. Like you said, way too specific to claim ignorance. I'm starting to just think he overpaid, has figured that out now, and expects the buyer to overpay even more.

There's another thread somewhere here on the forums asking the same questions about this seller. Definitely a no-go to me to be paying premium prices to someone using the handle "Stoker-sprocket", listing components (some by year) in the ad, then attempting to get off the hook for any issues that may arise by using a cheap disclaimer: "Selling for someone else - not responsible for any issues - I know nothing - look at the photos". Wouldn't spend that kinda money on anything from someone who pulls that kind of stunt.

I'm out of the running at this point, my offer of 1300.00 was turned down. There are still plenty to be had but this one did look very clean.

I think $1300 is a very fair offer for that bike - especially considering shipping charges (de rosa in Bicycles | eBay). If you're really looking for a De Rosa, there are plenty to be had for the price you offered.

FWIW
I just discovered that Doriano is producing a bike in his new Bixxis line entitled a Prima.

1300 is unlikely to get you an SLX DE Rosa in clean condition. My pretty rough one sold for that. I think 1600ish is about the average for an 80s SL/SLX De Rosa in decent shape - and that one has nice parts hanging on her. 1500-1700 is about right for a competent seller not saying things like I know nothing.

It is a repaint, the Columbus sticker is on top of the clear coat and De Rosa didn't have sparkles in their paint at this time....no one did.

If you have $1300 to spend on a De Rosa, I'd suggest that you use adhuntr.com and the facilitator thread, there are often great deals on Craigslist but rarely on ebay.

A 1984 with full campy just sold for 1,000 on ebay this past week. (Vintage 1984 Blue de Rosa Road Bike 700c Campagnolo 54cm | eBay). And several other late 80s SLX for around 1300 or less in the last few months.

Did you sale yours on ebay? There's a lot of value added for sure when it's an in person sale with a trustworthy seller and no shipping charges/possible problems.

ebay - and it sold to Australia with extra shipping.

That blue De Rosa went lower than I'd have expected, even with the minimalist ad.

What year is the bike. My Saronni has this type of glitter, it was purchased in Italy at a small bike shop.

Very good catch. Thats why he knows nothing. On second thought I'm not going to buy any of his bikes. Pisses me off, he knows its a fu*ken repaint.

This model is a De Rosa Professional, often mis-named as a Trophee or Super Prestige. Ray Dobbins links to Brett Horton's article which gives a good summary on the origins of the whole Super Prestige race Super Prestige Pernod
But I digress.
The dealer in question is legit, based in the East Bay and has a large collection. This one was also on craiglist yesterday.
I purchased one of his other listed De Rosas and can vouch for him. He is a nice fellow.
In reading some of his ads, I must admit that they are a little odd and out of character (I don't know him well), remember us vintage bike enthusiasts are all a little eccentric and quirky!
