Hi, I'm looking to find out how my 87 Raleigh Technium 420 compares to other's ie 400,440,460. I picked it up cheap (free) and want to know what it's worth.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=477240

I won't pay more than $150 for anything with stem-mounted shifters...$$

I know there were Technium-labeled bikes that were considered higher end, credible machines but I'm afraid your 420 isn't one of them. Stem mounted shifters, safety levers and plastic dork disk are all dead giveaways of a lower end model. I'm thinking $50-$75.

I sold a 420 last year (same color as yours) for $125. It's not a high end bike but it's a decent rider.

Looks barely ridden! I'd guess $150-175 as-is in Portland, OR.


Is that a lycra Schwinn saddle on it?

If I had that and wanted to sell it, I'd put on some barcons, some aero brake levers and a plain black saddle, then ask for $300, happy to accept $275. I just happen to have those parts on hand - I wouldn't go buy them then add them, unless I got them cheap, like $5 apiece.

I've got a nice Technium 440. One of my favorite rides. I paid $120 for it about three years ago. In good condition. Put some new parts on it. Wouldn't sell it for less than $250 now.

We need better pictures to make a real evaluation. I can't tell the components or condition from the one small (non-drive side) photo. Stem shifters and suicide levers indicate a lower end bike but the cockpit may have been changed out at some point.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'll try to post some larger pictures. I'm hoping to get into riding more, and plan on using this bike for a starter. Is the 420 the bottom of the pile for the 400 series? I'm curious because I see a lot of information for Technium 440 and 460, but almost nothing for the 420.

The frame and components are decent enough that I'm surprised to see stem shifters and suicide brake levers. I suspect they are not original.

Anyway, nice bike but dirty and neglected (needing an overhaul.) I'd put it right around $100 as-is around here.

In the spring I sold an '87 Technium 440 for $150.
New bar tape, all bearings repacked, all components cleaned, new cables and housing.

It was only a 48cm, so maybe that limited price/interest? At the same time, i'd be hard pressed to want to buy one that's been fully reconditioned for more than $200.

I think I read somewhere that the 420, 440, & 460 all had the same frame but, the higher model numbers had better components. I've got the first year made 84 model 440. It's a good riding machine equipped with mid level Suntour derailleurs & Sugino cranks. I converted it to upright handlebars and, put an inexpensive seat with spring suspension on it.

The Technium 400 was the lowest model. Also a decent, entry level bike.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think everything, but maybe the seat is original because I saw an identical bike that was sold online for $400. I thought that was a little high although the bike looked spotless and mine isn't. I plan to clean it and grease it and give it a try for a little while before I buy something newer...

I'm happy with it because it was free and it reminds me of my childhood.

That price is incredibly high for a stem shifting turkey lever entry bike, even in good condition.

I don't know, it's a "Harvest Cyclery" website that listed the bike for $449 and said sold. Maybe they found a sucker like me that didn't know what they had. But I found mine at a freebie barn at our town dump...

75.00, make that an offer. And don't upgrade anything, just leave as is then sell it later. When your ready to upgrade you'll get your money back. There is a nice Vintage Gitane T'dFrance around here somewhere. I almost picked it up, for 145!!!
