Mondia Special
This bike is for sale for 350$.
The serial number is 176xxx, I don't remember the last three digits I have only one picture, I don't know the components. Is it a fair price, if it is a Reynolds 531 frame? http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...psu7olclsd.jpg |
Not enough information. If it has all campy goodies, $350 might be okay.
|
What I can see is a steel cottered crank and a Simplex FD, I'd say $350 is too high.
|
Looks sweet. Cottered cranks!? Could be something really nice. TTT stem, leather saddle. I would certainly consider it. And $350 is very reasonable.
|
hell yes! swiss bikes rule!
how do i know? i had the same bike (was a tigra) with the chromed nervex lugwork that BB very well could be the über-rare campy one, the steel cranks and cheap french threaded pedals, the tipo high-flange hubs, brroks saddle. |
A little high...a few on L.A. craigslist all campy (does not appear this one is) for weeks at 500.00

And I bought a Austro-Daimler, nice condition, Shimano 600 , Brooks saddle for 100$. Just sold yesterday the one I had, in worse condition with Suntour components for 230$. I think I got a good deal! |

I think there was a little silence while we waited for someone to disparage the Arabesque on the AD. There was a recent thread.
I like the AD, the Mondia has a lot of rust on the top tube, fancy lugs though. |
The A-D has a Brooks too, but I'll keep it. I had a Wright's to put instead.
This is the Austro-Daimler SL that I sold one day before I bought the grey one. 531 Reynolds, Suntour VG-T derailleur, the rest is almost the same http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/...psqjgba6g2.jpg |
that mondia is so rad. love it.

How should I remove the rust??
|
rust ...
- dunk the components in a can of mineral spirits for a few hours. - follow up with naval jelly (loctite brand). - polish components with a file, auto sandpaper (600 grit), and mother's. - for chrome, try aluminum foil and wd-40. - for frame rust, search the bikeforums. if it's real bad, you may need to soak the frame in a tub or kiddie pool full of phosphoric acid. for my one frame that i wanted to sell that had bad surface rust, i used sandpaper, then did some paint work. if it's just surface rust on the frame, and you aren't going to sell it, you may just want to leave it alone, possibly using a clear nail polish to prevent further rusting. |

If you are lucky a lot of it will come off, after that good quality paste wax....if it were mine I would not clear coat it wax is all you will need...do it once in awhile as service. Mondia's are nice and short of a high dollar respray I don't think it would be worth it ... remember it has a great look and is only original once. Enjoy it you almost got it for free....after all it's a bike. In my opinion is that its the nicest of the bunch. JM2C's Ben change the crank to campy or sugino |
Very interesting Mondia. That model came fully equipped with Campy NR components so at some time the parts got seriously down graded, for some reason. For sixty five bucks, you made one heckuva score on that frame. Always liked those. Looks like the rust will clean up OK. But be super careful around those decals. They're very delicate at this point. Especially the pin-striping-looking ones. I personally wouldn't use polishing compound near those. Unless you are very careful. Maybe a light Oxalic acid solution first.
Is the bottom bracket Swiss threaded? Be careful. |
