1990 Cannondale Black Lighning

1990 Cannondale SR500 Black Lightning 3.0. Suntour/Sugino component mix. Does NOT have original Vetta saddle. 56cm

At most there's only a hundred miles or so on the bike. Rim sidewalls show NO wear. New Kenda generic tires. It has some scrapes and such.

What do you all think it's worth? (before anypne comments let me say that specialty Cannondales are not my in my expertice)

Pics later if its still light out when I get home...

About 3yrs ago you couldnt touch one on CL/Yakaz or Ebay for under 500. One '90 with a 60cm frame was going for 600.00 on Ebay. Not sure if the BL is commanding that kind of money now but one thing is for sure, they are elegantly villanous.

If you can get that for 350 or less; you should be on the way.

I think OJ is pretty close. Maybe a little less, but that's a nice BL.
Never been a big fan of the Suntour components myself, but as a whole the bike presents very well in the pictures.

Seems a bit on the high side. I mean technically their just normal road frames with the sparkly black paint and the black and gold mid level Suntour group. Guess I just don't see the draw to them.

Cassette (freewheel) sure looks like more than 100 miles used. That being said, it's nice. I'd rock one if I ever found one in my size and price range. Good find. No local comps around to compare value.
One question though, for the Cannondale diehards; could you get a black/gold "normal" 3.0 road frameset?

I don't consider myself an expert in these evaluations but I do follow EB and CL transactions close enough to stay tuned in. When I saw your post, I instinctively felt $600 was the right money for this bike. Judging from the other responses, it looks like anything under this would be a good deal. Good luck!

Per the OP's original post, this BL is already in his garage, otherwise he wouldn't be taking photos of it.

Correct. I have it but don't know what FMV is for specialty Cannondales. I've only ever owned a few entry level models.

$600 for a true garage hanger would be possible. I don't think the condition shown in the photos indicates a 100 mile bike. $400-$450 realistic value, and most of that comes from the "Black Lightning" mystique. Average Cannondale road frame with mid level Suntour components. IMHO.

Probably so. I went off rim sidewall wear for mileage guesstimation but the drivetrain appears to have more than 100 miles!!

Still a beautiful bike. If I could justify another road bike........

The fun with Cannondales is the entry level and upper level often shared the same frameset but with different colors and group.

There has never been a mystique about the BL with me, I just wanted that frame. And that is just what I did, found a Criterium Series and painted it...black with gold metal flake.

I don't get 'it'. What am I missing? I have read about these before and didn't understand the price. Its a 25year old black Cdale with some Suntour Edge components. Why the price difference compared to other Cdales with better components? Wasn't this same frame used on other models even?

Agreed, it's hard to understand. Some folks just go ga-ga over the color combination and black components. It was very popular when new and has remained so for the last 25 years.

Go figure, just don't try to apply logic.

It's the market. They have always had a following and some (like me) love them because they are a road rocket and cliff climber. So, if desire is up you can expect prices to do the same. Criterium frames are a well kept secret and at best are neglected due to what critics claim on the internet.

Keep the drum beat going OldsCOOL! I have 2 frames and 2 complete Cannondales that I'd like to sell before the end of the year. I also have 2-3 to build as well, one from Henry III, one from MRV, and a boxed ST400 frame with less than 100 miles on it.

You are busy, my man. Cannondales dont last on our CL. I found a black SR600 for 250.00 in Traverse City and it was gone before I could move on it. That was in February just before the frameset build a few years back.
