1982 Motobecane Jubile Sport

Thoughts on this 1982 Motobecane Jubile Sport offered at $125? https://easttexas.craigslist.org/bik/5669258672.html

From the catalogues I found, I believe this was virtually the same bike also offered in 1981, though in the '81 catalogue the frame is Vitus 172 with Vitus 888 fork, while in 1982 it's is Vitus 888 for both (as it is on the stickers in the photos). I know this was the low end of their 'lightweight' racing/road bikes, with a 23.7 lb spec, so this is not a highly desirable bike. The Gunmetal grey is also one of the duller Motobecane colors, unfortunately, but the bike looks like it's pretty much as it left the bike shop, less petals.

One concern I have is in this photo:

Is that a rust bubble in front of the lug on the head tube, or just a paint blob? Also, I'm guessing it's a 56 cm, while I would prefer a 58 (I'm 6'0") -- does this look like a 56 to everyone else?

The bike is a bit of a drive for me, so I can't just go look at it. The seller got it as a trade in at a shop he used to work for, so he reports no other info about how the bike was used. He says it's in good shape, just needs a tune up and tubes/tires, and that he doesn't see any rust on it. I've seen in old threads that these are pretty good riders, I'm just not sure this is worth driving out and dickering for.

I can't help with value on this one except to say that $125 sounds totally reasonable to me.

I think it does look larger than a 56, though. Probably a 58 or so.

Looks like a paint bubble.
Frame is a 58cm.
You can probably improve on price a wee bit, but it is a nice rider in vg condition. I would lay out a Ben Franklin portrait for it with no issues.
Chainstays are set pretty narrow, so the rubber on the rims now will be as wide as you can go.

Frame looks larger than 58 c-t to me. I think that is a great price.

Thanks for the input. Glad to hear the consensus that it's probably a 58 - in retrospect I'd agree (hopefully mparker326 is wrong, I'd hate to drive out and find it larger than 58 c-t). Since I have a good ways to drive to see it, I'll see try to feel him out about getting it at less than $125. Of course, the wild card is that my wife may put the kibosh on this before I even go.

Oddjob2's comment about the tires got me thinking. The original bike came with "13/20 alloy rims" and "Michelin Elan 27 x 1 H. P. gumwall tires" (which I'm guessing is what we see in the photos). What's the equivalent, if there is one, in 700 tires? Will it be an issue finding new tires? And just how narrow will the max tire width be?

25mm = 1". If the rims are smaller, the chainstay widens, so maybe 28s.

Thanks, got it. I hadn't thought about needed to source 27" tires. I was thinking on a bike like this I could throw on the Schwalbe Luganos I took off my CAAD10, but now realize that wouldn't work. Would I need 27" tubes, also, or are tubes more forgiving than tires? I recently bought a 10 pack of 700x20/25 tubes.

700c tubes work in 27 inch tires.

Thanks, good to know. The seller hasn't responded to my second email, so this isn't likely to happen, but one of these days that info will be put to good use.

On an unrelated note, this is the third time I've attempted to contact a CL seller who specified email responses and not gotten a return message. I think that's why so many bikes on the local CL sit unsold for so long. Weird.

I have experienced the same problem when attempting to use Kijiji. When I have a listing, I always check my junk mail folder.

Yes, I'm thinking that's the case, but he did find my first email. Maybe I'll nudge him again...
