Koga Miyata

I'm looking to buy a commuter bike and my eye fell on this Koga Miyata racer:

Known specs:
- Regida dp18
- Shimano 600

The seller says the rear gear shifter sometimes isn't responsive. Would this be something a little lube could fix? I would be paying around $170. Worth it?

Many thanks!

1- not my kind of bike for commuting, but people use all sorts of bikes for commuting. Make sure this would do what you need.

2- i would buy that for $170 in a heartbeat, assuming the frame, fork, and wheels are solid.

3- Nobody here could tell you if the shifter will work again as they havent seen it, but often times gummed up STIs can be coaxed into shifting well with some lube.

4- sweet find

What are you looking for in a commuter? Do you need to haul anything, possibly on a rack? Are you going to ride in rain or snow? Are you going to be locking the bike up outside? High theft area? This bike isn't the typical hauler/commuter/beater. It's a racing-style road bike. It's light and nimble, meant to go fast, but not built to haul anything or mount fenders.

BUT... That's an awfully nice bike. If it was my size, I'd be all over it at $170.

It's hard to say what the rear shifter might need without more detailed info or seeing it in person, but there's a good chance it's an easy fix. Maybe just new cables and housings. Or the shifter, being an older Shimano STI unit, might need a good flushing.

Thanks for the answers so far. Concerning the commuting: I will be travelling very lightly or even pack nothing at all most of the times. There is a low-risk cycle shed at work and when the weather gets too nasty I will be travelling by train. For me it's about speed in the first place.

I think I'm going to go for it!

If you're over 1.85-2.0 m tall, it will be a fun and fast ride. Enjoy!
