Value of a Super Record Gruppo

I have a dilemma. I have an opportunity to buy a 1974 Masi Gran Criterium (Italian) for $1500 complete with Super Record gruppo, or $650 for frame and fork only. The wife doesn't want me to spend $1500 on the bike but I could probably get away with buying the frame. I have a Nuovo Record gruppo that I can put on it. In the long term, would the bike be more valuable with the original gruppo intact? Also, is the existing gruppo worth $850? I want to ride the bike but I also look at it as an investment that I hope to be able to make money on down the road.

A 1974 GC would have come with an NR group as standard. 1974 was the first year for SR, are the components dated to 1974? If they are all '74 dated, with titanium BB spindle, and in excellent condition, the group may be worth $850.

If the frame and fork are in good condition, $650 is a good deal!

^^^ If it's the original group and the dates match the frame I would have a hard time passing. If it is not original and newer I would point out and get the price down or just do FF. Many think frame and fork separated are best way to sell for the most money but original with bike says a lot to me. I think it adds a value above just part out as they are not easy to come by.

And why not take a magnet, first year could be the unobtainium titanium. I have yet to find any but hope someone here does at some point. At least unbroken.

$650 cdn would be a really fine price.

I saw a 1975 Masi Catalog on Bob Hovey's site. With Super Record, suggested retail was $1095. Good grief, that must have seemed like a fortune back then.

The frame and fork are a pretty good deal assuming good condition. Likely the SR group is a bit later, likely not unobtainium. I'd go with the frame, fork and your NR group. Happy wife, happy life... and date-correct restorations are the most valuable. Good luck!

Often Super Record is not but super record reduced, superleggera pedals, nuovo record Bottom bracket substituted.
If date codes are 74, and all super record a deal, invite the wrath.
I paid 1400 for an Italian '74 that needed paint and had a bunch of incorrect parts.

Yes, it did. Many of us Cat 4's were on a budget and used secondhand equipment if we wanted to race at all.
