Nishiki Sport: Is it worth $200

Hi,

I am looking for a bike to commute to work (about 8-10 miles, one way). I have never used a Nishiki bike before. Do you guys think that the following bike is worth $200?

Nishiki Sport 12-speed road bike.

Thanks

Though unsure of the market strength in your area, the most I would pay for such an entry level bicycle would be between $50 and $100, and the higher price would require that the bicycle is road worthy and safe to ride.

The Nishiki will meet your riding needs but, based on the pictures, you might have to spend another fifty to a hundred dollars making it road worthy and safe to ride.

As someone who would be interested in buying it to refurbish and sell- Its worth $40-60 to me as is. Keep in mind thats in my location where the secondary bike market is cheaper than SF. It would take $50-75 to refurbish and improve. I would try to sell it for $190 and most likely get my asking price. Again, thats a full refurbish.

As a rider for me to keep, I would want to buy that for $100 at most. It will need $70 in components and updating to be worthwhile to me if I do the work, and figure $170 if a bike shop does the work.

I would say the bike would work for what the OP wants but is priced a bit high in current condition. These had fairly nicely done lugged hi-ten frames, but the components are all fairly low end and a bit rough looking. Considering the poor description of the bike I would guess it would need a full servicing with new consumables to be commute worthy so figure on spending another $100-125. So I would say the bike is really only worth $100 or so. In the $200-300 price range you can usually start find fairly nice mid level bikes that are basically ready to ride.

Here are a couple of much better deals in your area as examples.

1984 Centurion Pro Tour 15
Fairly nice touring bike with nice components would make a much nicer commuter.

Nashbar 24 speed road bike with shimano 105 and 600 parts
Not high end but nice somewhat modern bike with Brifters, that looks basically ready to ride. For $100 it might be a bit of a drive but an option.

This guy sells in my local market. I think he's the guy that beats me to all the good bikes at the garage sales, ha. Anyway, he usually doesn't do any work to them, so you are getting "as-is". Nicest bike I've seen him with, I bet you could bargain him down... Stowe "Terbo Airconquest" 16-speed Road Bike (56cm) +carbon fiber fork

You can do better for $200 - look South Bay/San Jose area. I think you'll get a similar or better bike for less.

That Centurion is really cool. I'll link a few more bikes.

A decent little early 90's hybrid

Univega Via Montego Road Bike - $100 (concord / pleasant hill / martinez)

Univega Via Montego Road Bike

1992 Trek 930 would be a great commuter with some 1.5" wide slicks

Trek 20" Frame - $129

Trek 20" Frame

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll see if the Centurion is still available.

EDIT: Nope, the Centurion is gone :-(

That Nishiki would be about a $100 bike in Atlanta. I wouldn't give more than about $80 for it.

The good thing about being in the Bay area is that the bike market moves quickly. Improve your ability to identify a bike of decent quality (aka lurk these forums a short while) and be ready to jump on one when it comes up.

And since nobody's asked, are you sure you're looking at the right size bike(s)?
