Trek 460 Any Good?

Vintage Trek 460

Trek 460 any good? It's been up a month so I can most definitely get him down on price. Looks like '85 460, anyone know about quality of frame and components? Worth it?

I rode my '85 460 for 9 years before selling it to a good home. Good? No question about it. It was the entry level racer for the weekend warrior that wanted a light, nimble and dependable bike. If it fits and for a decent price per condition...grab it.

Here is the one I had until 2yrs ago....

Make sure you inspect it closely. I've been looking myself, and have noticed things aren't moving in my area. Mostly junk, and usually crazy prices. Anyway, mostly a slow market with things moving at lower, more realistic prices. Nothing wrong with Treks.

The thing I've noticed about old Treks is the wide variety of parts used. On a plain 400 they would use lower cost items. Parts would get better going up to a 420, then 440. So, on a 460 they probably installed nice stuff. If it's all Shimano 600 that would be nice. (Watch out if it's got a Maillard Helicomatic hub on the back). $200 is pricey. But, if it's in great shape that's probably a reasonable price.

Looks like the same as the one in my garage that I am cleaning up for a friend. Suntour Cyclone.

Nice bike this one looks to be a a 85 model with the Suntour Cyclone drivetrain 12 speed friction, which were about the nicest functionaly of the components Trek used around this time. I would say it is definetley worth the asking price if it has no major issues.

From the poster who tends to value Japanese bikes like gold! Buy American. It's not Helicomatic.

+1

TruTemper Trek frames are great. I have a 1988 Trek 360 TruTemper that rides sublimely and is very responsive. Zukahn1 is right about Cyclone, per spec below. If the subject bike doesn't need a full rebuild $200 in SC is a decent asking price.

I sold my (above) for 260.00, was handed the cash with zero questions and the guy took off. Mine had a suntour 2-prong 14-28 freewheel. The Cyclone S was a new release that year and shifted very nicely. And to echo the comment on True Temper frames, my 54cm 460 weighed in the 22# range with the Michelin Krylions. Very responsive and excellent cornering geo.
