How's this deal?
I'm specifically looking to use this bike for winter commuting/general foul weather but I figure I'd post it here because any relevant information would be useful.
I found this Schwinn High Plains on craigslist, listed for $85 but I got it down to $70. Does anyone know anything about this bike? I can't find any information about it. High end? Low end? Really bad? Good deal? Bad deal? Basically $70 seems like a fine deal on almost any bike that isn't going to immediately fall apart, but I don't really know anything about these things. If anything knows anything specific about this bike otherwise, or has ever had one or ridden one, let me know, the internet is pretty blank on the matter. In my situation $70 is "kind of a lot of money", so I'm basically just looking for a second opinion. Please provide!

High end????
I'm sure it's a low end bike, but at $70 it's good as long as it's in working order.
My son salvaged a bike from the trash and rode it for years when he was in college... and it was stored outside most of the time.

Tires are flat, rear derailleur is severally rusted combined with the chain. And that's just scratching the surface going by a pic.

What condition was it in for $60? I looked on bicyclebluebook (can't say how reliable that is, don't know much about it) and it said that one which is like new would be reasonable for $60. I'm looking at an english 3 speed which may be better suited except for the steel rims.

A rear Derailleur and a chain will cost you $25. I had one of these come through my house. Not a bad bike for your purpose. Your chances of finding a ready to ride refurbished bike for $70 is zero. If the bike works, you can lube the chain and live with a rusty RD cage through the winter.

Depends. Are you looking for a project? Might end up being a nice bike after you do all the repairs it needs....

I'm not fit to do almost any of the repairs except cleaning by myself, and I'm fine with having to do repairs but not if it puts me out a lot of money!

It's either a 1990 or 91 Schwinn 1990 MTB And Road Bicycles -- High Plains / Woodlands , Schwinn 1991 Catalog -- High Plains
I wouldn't buy it. It shouldn't be hard to find a better mtb (in better shape) for about the same amount of money. What craigslist are you on and what's your height? I'd like to look for alternatives.

I'm 5'7", in central jersey but north and south jersey are options. Very much appreciate the help! Not looking to break $100 since I'm essentially looking for a beater. Found a raleigh gritstone and a giant butte that look fine, but can't find any info on them. Also a raleigh 3 speed but I'm trying to determine if that can be modified for wintry conditions properly (with an aluminum front wheel). I made a thread about it elsewhere.

I think you did OK. This looks like yours. Schwinn catalogs, 1991 - 2000 (9 of 577)
That is a good frame and you can build around it as you have time and money.

I thought I'd find more, but I guess riding season is winding down.
The Butte you were talking about. Certainly needs less work than the Schwinn you posted.
Giant mountain bike - $99
Giant mountain bike
This is perhaps getting a little tall, but the price is right! (the saddle is trashed, and the pic doesn't have great detail, so who knows what else needs replacing)
Diamond Back Ascent - $30 (Denville)
Diamond Back Bike
I have a Diamondback Ascent as well (86) this is earlier, so 1985-ish?
Dimondback Accent MTB - $80 (Laurel Springs)
Dimondback Accent MTB
Lastly, what would be my pic and a whopping $10 over budget (but doesn't look like it needs any work or $$$). Cons: too nice for a winter beater?
Barracuda A2F Mountain Bike USA Made Like New - $110 (Little Falls, NJ)

The original Schwinn posted looks a couple of sizes too big for a 5'7 rider
$70 is not a super high price, but it would be better to spend $125 on one that doesnt need much work (and that fits you)

I'd give about $40-50 for the Schwinn in that condition. Minimum, you'll need to put in new tubes, and maybe the chain, too. (~$30)
The black Diamondback is pretty basic, but in much better shape. Bolt-on wheels, while indicative of a lower-end bike, are nice for security if the bike's going to spend a lot of time chained up outside.
The Giant Butte (and you can't deny) is a much nicer bike still, even if it's a 20-year old model.

That model Schwinn is not bad at all. I have owned & ridden one, before. BUT, like others have said,, you are going to have to spend some money on it before you can even throw a leg over it. HOW MUCH money ? You won't know til it is over. I had rather have the Giant .

I'm going to check out a $75 raleigh gritstone today that seems to be in fine condition. I can't find out anything about the bike so I can't say I'm too gung ho about it but if it works I'll probably get it. Can anybody weigh in on if the barracuda would be that much better than this mysterious mountain bike for the price difference? Here's a picture. Pros for me: no grip shifters, bar ends, horizontal dropouts (may turn it into a singlespeed).

The barracuda looks pretty nice, but at this point $40 is a decent amount for me, so if its significantly better I'd go for it but otherwise the Gritstone (whatever it is) looks to be in fine condition for the price
