First restoration project - would this be a good purchase
 
Hello all!

Looking for a vintage frame for my first ever restoration project, possibly in single speed / fixed gear.

Would this be a good frame (and price)?
[*]1948 Raleigh Clubman frame with Reynolds 531 tubing[*]GBP60 (comes with handlebars, stem, cranks, bb and seatpost, and a Lucas dynamo).[*]Can also buy a 3 speed sturmey archer wheelset for 15 extra, either steel from 1938 or alloy from mid 60s.

Does the paintwork etc. look in good enough condition to restore without too much repainting? Would it be sacrilege to sandblast and powdercoat? Would fixed gear be possible (I think so)?

+1 Unless you already have most of the stuff needed to build the bike. If not, a pocket full of cash will prove to be a very necessary restoration tool. Put another way, you would be much better served to buy a complete bicycle and use that as a starting point.

I can appreciate where Clang and Randy are coming from but what are the chances of scoring another 1948 Raleigh Clubman with Reynolds 531? I'd be tempted but it is a bit expensive and there will be lots of work.

True - but if you appreciate things like this as utilitarian art, the labor, time & money all can seem worth it.
Some of my favorite things in life are those that I never will make a dime on.

I don't mean to poo-poo on the dreams of someone with more ambition (and mechanical aptitude) than I have. If you do choose to buy it, there's plenty of experts at the C&V forums that will help you along with restoring this. My guess is that there will be old, harder to source parts involved.

It would make a nice "path racer" style fixed gear. It's got the horizontal dropouts needed. My advice would be to build it up with the frame as-is (patina! beausage!) and then only worry about repainting if you enjoy the way it rides.

Before buying I'd make sure the fork isn't bent and the stem isn't frozen. Cottered cranks can be a PITA. Make sure you know what's involved in servicing them before stating this one.

With the 3 speed wheelset the bike is mostly there. I'd plan to pickup an inexpensive 3 speed bike for the brakes, pedals, and misc. Maybe set it up as an upright bar bike first just to get your feet wet and get it on the road. Then it's a riding project and you can work on sourcing the period correct parts.
