Raleigh Record Bike

I just got this very nice looking Raleigh Record bike which had been standing in an old barn of my grandpa for years. He used to ride Triathlons on it and all the starting nr's were still on it plus all the dust and some rust it had contained in the years after that.,
So i took it apart, cleaned it up ,replaced the cables and now it looks as new.


The process of getting the bike back in shape was a lot off fun but as i already own to many bikes i would like to sell this one.


What would this bike be worth? I can't find any info about this exact model online (with Shimano 600 and Mavic wheels)

Especially if you own other bikes, one of them should go. I cannot fathom letting one go that belonged to my Grandpa as he owned none but if he had and I got my hands on it I would never let it get away. This one should be a keeper regardless of that anyway, very nice bike.

Very true words. However, as of 1st of Januari i am moving from Holland to America and there are only so much bikes that i can keep.
If this was to be on Ebay, what would be a fair price? I literally have no clue.


Is this some sort of special type? The old Raleigh team?
I was thinking between $400 and $600. Would that be fair?

It looks like what was sold in the USA as a Competition.

The Raleigh Record we had in Canada was not a high-end bike. I am surprised to hear yours has Shimano 600 on it, even after considering that 600 was not a high-end group BITD.

Yes, this is a much nicer bike than the Record that was sold in the US and Canada. I assume it was made for your market, but I would not call it a "special type", really. I note that it has a 531 decal, but not a Carlton one. It is not a super high end bike with the 600 group, etc, but it is a good quality mid range bike, and looks to be in nice shape. I think $600 is wishful thinking, but $400 should be achievable if the right buyer comes along. I don't know what the market is like where you are, but here in NYC I'd probably put it on Craigslist for $450 or so and see what happens.

Raleighs aren't worth much in Holland (got me a '79 Record for €75 - not as nice as yours, though), so selling it elsewhere sounds like a good idea. $400 for a bike with a 531 main triangle and fork blades seems a bit steep, but I've been surprised by eBay prices before.

Like I said, this having been Grandpa's bike would move it straight to the top of the list of keepers. Maybe that's sentimental, so be it. Also if Raleigh's aren't worth much in Holland then bring it with you and see what happens over here. ;)

The Reynolds decal style is 1974-1982, while the presence of Shimano 600EX would put it no earlier than 1978. Regardless, the serial should allow us to determine the exact year, which the OP should know, if the bicycle is being sold.

It's definitely a non-American, British or Canadian market model but I'm a bit puzzled by the Reynolds decal, which I've understood to be a USA market version developed to satisfy Schwinn by clarifying that the stays and forks were not butted, as was construed from the standard decal by some people.

Being a foreign market to me, I wouldn't have any idea as to fair market value but it's a very nice bicycle, in very good condition.

I inherited my grandfather's bicycle and did use it. However, had it not fit or had I no inclination for cycling, I'm sure he would have wanted me to sell it and use the money for something that I would use and enjoy. That way, I would remember my grandfather every time I used the new item and the bicycle would be enjoyed by someone who would use and appreciate it. IMO, it's far better than having the bicycle sit, forgotten and neglected, in a barn, basement or garage.

Well they can usually be made to fit well enough and this one seems to be in the hands of a proper cyclist who serviced it. Aside from that the alternate fate would not necessarily have to be forgotten or neglected. IMHO we of the C+V thinking by definition keep these bikes and way of thinking going which is what I am advocating here.
