Advice please! Peugeot Racer (1985ish P10?) and a 1984 310 Miyata

Hey all,

First time poster here. I'm an everyday commuter here in the weird and wonderful City of Baltimore, and I've been on the hunt for my 2nd bike for a few months now. I'm considering getting a the 2nd bike and then either

1) Convert my current ride (1989 Schwinn Traveler) into a fixy, or
2) Convert the new bike into a fixy
3) Or heck, I don't even know if I really want a fixed gear, maybe just keep 'em both

I'm looking at a couple bikes on CL.

1) A 1985 or 1986 Peugeot <https://baltimore.craigslist.org/bik/5885062551.html> currently listed at $300
2) A 1984 310 Miyata <https://baltimore.craigslist.org/bik/5852010617.html> at $150 down from $250

For the Peugeot I'm thinking its either a 1985 or 1986 Pro 10 based on the catalogues (Cycles Rťtro-Peugeot), but not certain. The Miyata I'm quite certain is a 1984.

Any thoughts on either of these bikes, for these prices? My initial draw is the Peugeot, but I would need it to be much closer to $200. I've read up on the 310's, and this definitely seems like a good price and a solid bike. I know nothing of Peugeots though.

Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated!

It's a Peugeot PSV from 1984, not a Pro 10.....
It's definitely a higher spec bike than the Miyata.
It was pretty much one of the last bike model that Peugeot made with all Euro/90% French components, before they started specifying mostly Japanese components on their bikes in a big way, after 1984.
Three hundred bucks is pretty much what it's worth in very good to mint condition, which this example seem to be in. If you can get it for something like $275, and lower, it will be a bargain for a really nice classic 80's Peugeot. Just make sure you read up on what the PSV is all about, as its "Frenchness" will mean replacement parts and components will not be as readily available, but they still exist, you just need to search a bit for them.
Here's mine I got new in 1984 and I still have it:

I modded it up through the years to my preference. I got it down from close to 24 pounds to 19.25 pounds with lighter weight/higher spec components and wheels.

I would not "convert" ( ie.removing the rear DR hanger) any bike to a fixie unless I could return it to a multi speed if I wanted too.
The weak link in the Peugeot was the plastics used in some of the components used to shift the gears and some early brake levers...easy to up date if they wear out or break.
Given proper maintenance the BB an the other "french" stuff will last quite awhile....I thought at some point Peugeot might have switched to a more standard threading but not sure..."French" experts will chime in.

How far is your commute? On the mean rough streets of Baltimore a good hybrid may give you a better ride if your only going a few miles.

That Peugeot is nice and clean.

Chombi1 - Thanks for the ID - just out of curiousity, what gave the model away? I was eyeballing it vs. the catalogues for about 30 min and couldn't quite place it. I'm a bit sad to hear that $300 is a fair asking price. It's about double what I was hoping to spend on a bike right now. It just looks so freakin' good though... kinda gets me worked up. Great lookin' Peugeot you have there too, btw.

Any thoughts on the $150 1984 310 Miyata as far as appropriate value?

Bianchigirll - it is a very short commute. Only about 1 and a quarter miles one way. I'm sure you're right, that a hybrid would be more comfortable, but I'm pretty drawn to steel road bikes.

That Peugeot IS slick, right??

The Miyata 310 is a fine bike for your intended use (commuting) and it's priced right at $150. The price is not a steal but cosmetically the bike is in good shape esp. for its age. This is a quality bike with a chrome moly main triangle (the fork and stays varied by model year) and pretty good components. Those are pretty decent (wide) rims and will take a 27 x 1 and 1/4 or a 700c x 32c tire which is a good choice for commuting.

I'd overhaul the bike, replace all the consumables (cables, chain, etc.) and buy a quality set of tires for commuting. Nashbar is having a 30% sale (!!)

Chrome fork, lack of seat post binding bolt, decal on fork. Like other things in life, you get what you pay for, worth the asking price.

Miyata 310 is at the lower end of the Miyata line. It is a good value at 1/2 price of Peugeot and will perform adequately as a commuter. Just not quite as spirited a bike to ride.

I really like that Pug; it would not be my first choice for a commuter but it may work for you given how short the commute is. The Miyata is cheaper and, IMHO, a better commuter.

Thanks for the tip on the sale at Nashbar - I certainly plan to do an overhaul on the Miyata if I go that route

As I noted, Peugeot did not switch to me "standard" threading and sizes till after 1984.
The 84 PSV had Swiss threading on its bottom bracket shell and French threading on its steerer tube.
It also has an almost proprietary French style braze-on FD mount. I say proprietary as it works best with only the Simplex FD model that came with it. The similar Mavic FD was designed with a lower FD slot that tends to position it a bit too high when chainrings 52 tooth and smaller are used as the big chainring......
But the bike is French, afterall......
