Value of 70's Dawes Super Galaxy?
Vintage 1971 Touring bike all original!!!
I'd be interested in this bike at about half that price. What are everyone's thoughts on the value of this bike?
Thanks much!

Still learning
With the fenders, luggage, and rack, I think you're $200 mark is well under FMV. I have a Galaxy, which is a straight gauge 531 frame, rides like a Super Course. A Super Course in rtr condition can bring $250-$275.

I have a newer Super Galaxy, probably early 90's that I bought from the original owner in immaculate condition quite a few years ago for £400. Wonderful touring bike! Took me all around Europe. The bike in question seems to be in decent condition - see if you can make out the 531 tubing decal. Asking price isn't out to lunch imo

These bikes don't come up every day. I don't think this is a crazy price given the condition but it is on the high side. Still sometimes that's what you have to pay if you want a quality vintage bike. $200 is too low in any case.

Question for the Dawes experts -
Is machine's kitting OEM? Looks as if it must have had numerous later upgrades.
The Suntour Cyclone front mech for example did not exist in 1971.
Did anyone else notice that the Cyclo-Touriste chainset was fitted with one of those shift smoothing discs between the inner and middle chainwheels? Not often seen.
Thank you for any information.

Thanks for in the input everyone.
Figured the bike was worth somewhere in the $200-$400 range with $200 definitely being on the very low end. Especially with all the extras.
My desire to get it for $200 is just the bargain hunter/cheapskate in me!
After talking with you guys and doing some additional research online, I've decided the seller is probably pretty spot on in his asking price. I just got off the phone with him and he's gonna hold out for the full $400 which might take awhile considering it's December but he really doesn't seem to be in any hurry to sell. More power to him. Think I'll keep looking.
Thanks again for all the info!

After posting recalled that I had seen this fitting on Schwinn Sports Tourer bicycles.
First image is of such a chainset mounted to the bicycle, a 1974 model.
Second image is a chainset off the bicycle, same model year.
Third image is the part shown at Blackbirds site where it is called "shifting guide plate"
Fourth image is such a chainset shown in the Schwinn Service Manual where it is part 6 in the illustration.
Member Metacortex has posted that Schwinn patented this feature in 1968. In the patent drawing it is seen as item nr. 26. Fifth illustration.

That's interesting. I can see where it might be useful to have something between that half-step and granny.

While we're talking 1971 Dawes, thoughts on this:

CL ad
My guess is this one should be closer to $200, but not sure.
