Schwinn World Sport appraisal

Hi all, total newbie here with bicycles, just a commuter. Old bike was stolen today and looking for a replacement. Could someone help with judging if this bike is a good deal? From what I've read it seems like retro World Sports could go up to $120 in ready to ride. How do the parts look, anything off about the bike, etc. I know these can be heavy so I plan on asking the guy what year it is..hopefully post-1984? I'm thinking of haggling to $120 but sounds like the guy will be a little hard to crack.

Thank you!! I'm a student so any savings is more student loans for myself

Wow great find, thank you! So it should be lighter than the full steel versions, right? Does $160 sound about right given the condition and parts? Wish I had enough knowledge to tell whether something's off..

Since it is in nice condition if it is actually fully serviced and ready to ride with decent new tires the price is OK.

The condition is really nice: rust and scratch-free. I noticed the inner tube valve stems are at 90 degrees, and the Kenda tire labels are aligned with the valves, which speaks of competence and attention to detail in the refurbishment. I think $120 would be a respectful offer since there's not likely to be much competing interest in January.

And now to muddy the waters. If I was a budget minded college student in need of a commuter, I'd probably go the mountain bike route. This one has a nice frame and components (minus the seatpost and saddle, which look like cheap replacements).

Giant Kashmir - $65 (West Hartford, CT)

Giant Mountain/Hybrid Bike

There are some other 23" road bikes in Hartford that I could link, but they're probably only equal to the World Sport, and though cheaper, they're unlikely to be in as good of a condition. Example:

1987 Panasonic Sport DX - $100 (New Britain, CT)

Like New Panasonic Road Bike For Sale

I don't know how far away you can drive to investigate bikes. If you're dead-set on a road bike, this is about an hour away. MSRP was ~$750 in the early-mid 90's, so it's a big step up in quality.

Giant Allegre - $100 (Shelton, CT)

Giant Bike

Looks like a pretty fair deal. Especially if it's a good fit for you.

Settle about $135-$140 and both sides should be happy.
