advice on a rusted bike

I was rummaging my favorite junk bike place the other day and there was an old Raleigh of england road bike sitting there. It looks like it has been sitting in this outdoor bike pile for many years. It appeared to be dent free but scratched and scuffed really bad and had light surface rust all over. It would most definitely need a blasting and re paint. It said something on the top tube or headtube about team Raleigh winning the 78 or 79 Tour De France. The front wheel was missing too. Is this bike worth doing anything with in that kind of condition? I personally don't want to spend money on it but I hate to see it laying there rusting away.

Thread moved to Appraisals forum.

Without seeing pics of the bike it is hard to give you a meaningful appraisal.

K thanks. I doubt I am going to spend the hundreds it would take but it was a fine bike in it's day.

Might not be as expensive as you think. I can get a frame & fork sandblasted and powder coated locally for under fifty bucks.

...and if it's a nice model, restoration could cost a lot less than a comparable new bike.

Likely mass produced entry or mid level boom era Raliagh rusty and rough shape missing parts basically worth nothing. You can get bikes like this in fairly good shape for around $200 or less and even if you can get a nice repaint for $50 which is doubtfull it will cost you another $150-200 in parts and labor to finish it into a decent bike.

While that is the likelihood, we can't know for certain without pics or at least a better description.

It would be a shame if someone left a nice Raleigh Professional out on the scrap pile just because it was probably a low-end bike.

I wish I would have taken pics but sorry I didn't. I could get some sometime but busy as I get not sure if I will ever remember. I didn't think it was probably worth messing with but I had to ask cause you never know. If I ever get around to it I will stop back by and snap some pics
