Eddy Merckx AX

I was wondering about how much this bike is worth?

the frame is made by Litespeed, which is correct.

Description:
59cm
Prima 220 handlebars included Dura ace groupset 7700 series

I got the price down to $500 just by noticing that the full groupset is not there. Also, the cranks and chainrings don't look like 7700 to me
Is this worth it?

Is it just me or does one side of the bottom bracket look like it's been worked on so much that you can no longer remove it?

Sure does.

Is that the Ti frame?

Hmm yeah did not noticed that before! The BB doesn't look pretty.

And yes it is a Ti frame!

With those factors in mind, is it still worth it for 500?

Nope it looks like some of the parts on this bike have seen some pretty heavy tool abuse and looks pretty rough. As presented Not properly set up as a road bike with dropbars and everything working and a bit rough I would say it's worth about $400 maybe $500 if it's one you really want and plan to keep. Figure on spending at least another $200-300 to sort out the incorrect possibly damaged stuff to get it back to be the really nice bike it should be.

Hmm... tough one. Titanium bikes with Dura Ace can easily be double the price you're at. But this one needs work and doesn't have the most expensive part of the group which are the brifters.

I think it's worth $500 for a person wanting a titanium bike and willing to put a few hundred into it.

Yes...Electronic upgrade!
I think it needs too much work and correct parts will be at a premium, so at 500.00 only if you REALLY want it.
BB has me worried about what's inside the tube.
If it were up to me I would pass.

If it is 7700, the bottom bracket is an octalink , -- its not removed from the outside, but with a octalink tool which looks like an oversize cassette tool

Those BB's are not very expensive , so wouldn't be a detriment to me if I really wanted the thing

Cant tell anything about the wheels, but that scratched/scraped up rear derailleur is not worth $10 to me and cant tell the cranks condition, --- so for $500 your getting a frame, brakeset and maybe a set of wheels

seatpost is in a distressed condition, seat is a throwaway, stem is way too long - and the bars are junk

Not that I'm any great selling guru, but i'd probably be asking around 5-600$ for this mess too, but if the bike were complete and looked sharp , at least twice that

Hmm, the seller has all the components off the bike and wants to just sell the frame now and is asking $250. Is the frame alone worth $250?

Thoughts?

Also, thanks for all the informative replies. I really appreciate it!

I had one of these quite a few years ago.

I was not enamored with the ride.

That doesn't matter though, as the frameset is just a brushing and decal set from looking fresh.

So, yes, the frameset is worth that amount.

I rode a Merckx AX for many years. I sold the frame, fork and headset a few years ago for $600, but it was in very clean condition with no damage.

Other than the usual dings, crashes and what nots, what does clean entail for a TI frame? I know that for steel frames I should look out for rust but on a TI am in lost!

I'd not be too concerned with the bottom bracket cup damage.
Someone without the Octalink driver installed the BB - using channellocks or vise-grips.
I don't see any damage to the edge of the BB shell so this is minor to me.
Since it's a cartridge BB I'm not overly worried about what's inside the tube, either.
If it were a bit smaller I'd be all over that three minutes ago for $250.
You can't even score a Teledyne for $250 on the pirateBay anymore...how much more this bike!

As with an metal frame, a ti frame can crack, get dented and scratched, show crash damage, or fail at welds. In a used frame, cleanliness can be an indication of how well the owner treated and maintained it. A clean, shiny -- or buffed in the case of ti -- frame is more likely, in my view, to have been treated well. It's also much less work for the new owner.

Dude- if you can crack or dent a Litespeed Ti frame, my hat's off to you -you're an animal. I've ridden a Litespeed since '94-'95, and the only wear on that thing is decals and a little bit of rubbing.
You can't dent those things - at least not the Litespeeds. That frame will be good as new when we are wormfood.
