Mercier road bike...good buy?

I'm in the market for my FIRST adult bike. Just something to take casual rides around town. I saw this bike pop up on Craigslist this morning and I'm considering making an offer on it as I've heard good things about Mercier bikes.

I can't post URL's yet so if you could connect the dots so to speak...

At $170 (Canadian mind you, $128 USD equivalent) it seems like a good deal. What are your thoughts?

This looks to be a lower end Mercier, perhaps a 100, and the price is likely OK esp. for Toronto where used bikes tend to be expensive. If the bike fits, this will make a good rider. Old french bikes have their quirks but they're neat in a vintage sort of way and they ride well. Biggest downside on the bike are the steel rims but wheels are easy to change. I'd say go for it if the bike fits at this price.

Here is a thread on vintage merciers, the 2d post is the same paint scheme as yours:

It's a solid price for Toronto. If you buy it, post some pics on the C&V forum (not the valuation one) and you'll get some ideas of how to fix it up properly.

I've owned a few older french bikes of this quality. They were all first rate riders even if a bit funky in terms of parts and/or fittings.

It appears to be a very early 1970s Mercier 100 which was the base model. That's a great price for T.O. provided it fits, is ready to ride and you're prepared to deal with the idiosyncrasies of a vintage French bicycle which can make it difficult to work on them and obtain compatible replacement parts. Here's a link which outlines the unique aspects of vintage french bicycles. French Bicycles

Thanks for your help everyone! I tried it out today and it fits me wonderfully so I picked it up.

I'll be posting in the C & V forum looking for tips to fix it up!
