GT Tachyon Cross Over bike

Got this bike at a local bike shop that was hosting some kind of garage sale! It's in incredible shape and all original. I've read a little bit about them and their 700D wheels. Kind of weird but very nice looking and comfortable.

I don't know where the Tachyon resides in GT's hierarchy but this looks like a $150 bike tops to me.

Over on the 650b Google group there have been a few for sale. Most of them have been converted to 650b wheel size sell between $500 and $600 approximately. Yours would need a new wheelset built around the hubs so maybe $200 less. It is almost impossible if not impossible to buy tires to fit that wheel size, 700d, which hurts in the resale. Going to 650 route opens up all kinds of options. I think you you have a nice bike.

$200 is on the low end for wheels, tires, and tubes. But the price needs to be knocked down because of the weird wheel size by the price of a new wheelset.

Due to the 700D wheelset, you either have to invest in a set of 650B wheels or price it as a parts donor bicycles. Personally, I wouldn't even consider it for the latter, given the SunTour XC LTD components. Pass.

650b tires on 700d?

Ive read that you can fit 650b tires on 700d wheels? Its a 3mm difference and many say it can be mounted without too much effort.

That depends on the tyre and rim combination. Some tyres can be very difficult to mount, even on correct size rims.

I mounted Panasonic Col De La Vie 650b tires on my Tachyon and rode without incident. A Tachyon was on the local CL for $100 a while back. Ebay completed sales back then were in the $300-400 range.

Maybe just get the tires and try riding it? It's a fun bike.
