1988(?) Bottecchia

I bought a bike that was advertised as a 1988 Bottecchia off of craigslist ~10 years ago for around $300. I've done a lot of searching around over the years and I've never found a frame with the exact paint scheme. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about the bike beyond that. Hoping someone can help me identify it.

I'm happy to supply additional pictures or information if it would help. Thanks so much!

Looks like you did well, especially if it came with more parts. I'm no expert, but know these are great bikes, well made, plenty of history, good to go.

Unfortunately, it was already a fixie when I bought it, so no original parts other than the frame/fork/headset/stem.

The Campione del Mondo decal shows the 1986 victory but not the 1989. The World Championships are held late enough in the year that it should not be a 1986 model. Also, it does not have the 1989 Carnielli 80th anniversary decal. It is almost certainly a 1987 or 1988 model.

The tre tubi Aelle decal indicates a lower mid-range model. In the late 1980s, Bottecchia did offer offer a model with your frameset called the Aelle/Tretubi/Special, equipped with a mix of economical Italian components. Bottecchia offered most framesets for individual sale, so there is also the possibility that it was purchased as a bare frameset and built up by original owner. That was actually a fairly common Bottecchia paint scheme, used on a number of different models.

Edit: Added catalogue scans of the Bottecchia Aelle/Tretubi/Speciale and a different model in the OP's colour scheme, except for the chrome fork and drive side chain stay. For some reason BF wasn't letting me upload pics earlier. Better late, than never.

Thanks so much for the reply. Do you have any idea what the approximate value would be? I had a knee injury a couple years ago and this has just been collecting dust since then (can't ride a fixie anymore). I'm considering converting it back to a road bike, or perhaps a singlespeed, but am weighing my options. The frame isn't a perfect fit, so I'm also considering potentially selling it. Any information you could give me about the value of the frame would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for such a detailed reply!

Well..... it's not a complete bike. Good thing the real derailleur hanger is still on there. It's a pretty bike. Vintage Italian bikes are in demand by collectors. Try for $400 and, see what happens.

I always wanted to try out a Bottecchia. Do you know the mysterious behind the Namesake?

I have the same frame, only in yellow/white instead of red/white. BB serial number M4 3549 53. It was a great ride!
